Fwiw , a lot of viewers seem to think a fire sprinkler system would have stopped this fire. Wind played a role here, the biggest problem was the flammable vinyl siding on the exterior. That building is in Stoney Plain , Alberta , That building is all rental units. Looks to have been built around 1995-2000 ? It may , or may not have had an interior fire sprinkler system , on the interior only. Which would not have been effective at slowing, or stopping a fast moving fire on the exterior. This fire started on a balcony , from a cigarette put out in a planter . The resulting burning planter caused a small inferno on the deck which went on to consume an entire wall of vinyl siding within 5 minutes. Meanwhile toxic, flammable soot smoke from the vinyl siding has filled the attic. Once the fire extends into the attic, the smoke will soon flashover. The sprinklers in the interior likeley haven't activated yet at this point, even if some have, the fire and collapsing roof will have compromised the piping, rendering it useless. All similar buildings in Alberta constructed in 2010 or later , now have sprinklers on all patio/deck areas. As well they are required to have fire suppression sprinklers in all attic spaces, this is on top of the interior fire sprinkler system. These code amendments were put in place to prevent this type of fire from happening, as it became obvious to municpal affairs , that interior only fire sprinklers were not effective for fires originating on the exterior of these vinyl clad fire traps. There are still hundreds of these condo buildings in our province built prior to 2010 , that are still very venerable to a fast moving exterior fire like this one, despite having fire sprinklers inside the building. Part 2 shows an excellent example of just how flammable vinyl siding is, a few pieces of burning roof fall to the ground at 2:28 , and the entire vinyl covered wall burns in less than 50 seconds, like it is soaked in gasoline. Insane !

I cant believe that the Tower was trying to put water (no pressure) on the fire before a line was even pulled from the Engine company, which was there first! Does this department pre-plan or drill for these types of buildings? I have been a firefighter for more than 30 years, I understand that you need to do a 360, but it took them 5 minutes before they did that, the officer should have done that on arrival and began his plan of attack while doing it.

Fire in the trusses, fuelled by strong winds and that lovely vinyl siding.... this building was a write off before the first truck arrived. Don't know if they are a career fire dept or not, but they need to study The Fire Officers Handbook of Tactics. The simple, basic COAL WAS WEALTH acronym was definitely NOT followed!!!! I was a very easy-going captain when I was on the job, but if my chauffeur parked the aerial in that location , I would have had him raising ground ladders for 4 hours!!!! That actually wouldn't have happened....My crew were trained on-point! Stoney Plain...wherever you are, do yourselves and the people you protect a favor....You need to read and practice from the authors of books by Norman, Terpak, and Dunn!!! Please don't think I'm bad-mouthing your dept. It's obvious that you guys were behind-the-8-ball upon arrival! The video clearly shows light-weight constructed apartments with the truss-loft fully involved, and the large BTU's of the auto-exposure of the vinyl siding causes the fire to gain rapid advancement. Oh, and it sounds like the wind is blowing hard too (BTW: All parts of COAL WAS WEALTH...Read the books) I would just like to see it done correctly, AND SAFELY...so everybody goes home!!!
