My friend bought this car for $60,000. The original owner brought it over to demonstrate the operation. When the afterburners were turned on the heat and shock wave was incredible.
The previous owner ran 1/4 mile time’s in the low 4 seconds and over 300 miles an hour.
I’m not sure what engine is in the car, but I think it was a J75.
My friend wanted to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation using the car. He was required to get a special NHRA license to run it at the tracks.
He set up a series of runs at a local drag strip near Chico, California to pass his test.
He had to make 5 runs which were progressively fast each time to prove he was qualified. The last run was a full speed with the afterburner on.
He left the line fine, but then things got hairy, you only have a few seconds from start to when you shut off the fuel and pull the twin chutes to slow you down. He forgot to turn the fuel off before deploying the chutes, the flame from the engine burnt the chutes, he had the brakes locked but blew out a front tire. The drag strip had a pea gravel emergency shut down trap at the end of the strip, unfortunately the car was airborne and traveling at an estimated speed of 350 mph. He ended up crashing into a tree 8 feet off the ground.
Fortunately he survived with some minor injuries, amazingly the chrome moly tube frame took most of the shock. He ended up repairing the frame and put another body on it, then sold it.
