Yeah, me too Larry.....only using a maul instead of an ax....more weight, wider cleavage. Works fine on SOME nice straight grain species like he is splitting (nice clear red oak in our area), IF that is all I ever ran into, I'd probably still do it that way. But as age creeps in, and you run into enough stuff that DOESN'T pop right open like that, you go to a splitter of some type.

I myself like to do this work, but just for my own pleasure, I chop up the remains of huge stumps and gnarled trunks that they did not need, and it hurts me very much to see how useful firewood should rot, the wood is hard, for kindling and grilling, the breed is called beech. I work with a hand saw and axes from fiskars, but recently I started testing an axe from a hand saw, and it seems to me that it will suit you better than me for a pine tree! I shake hands, Kazbek!

It's not that we deplore softwoods, it's because we have hardwoods that actually burn hotter and stay hotter for longer. That's like using gas that only gets 20 miles per gallon when you can buy different gas at the same price and get 30 miles per gallon. Why waste energy and time making firewood out of wood that is inferior to other woods that are readily available to you?
@stevenstewart7603
2 жыл бұрын
@@TicklesMyPickle1 I understand that but keep hearing that there are better woods but burning fir and pine a horrible bad and a huge no no. They actually believe it too. common sense says you burn the best economical wood wood in your region. Good hardwood is rare in my area. Oak runs between 185 and 200 per facecord. Fir runs at 80 to 110 per facecord.
@TicklesMyPickle1
2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenstewart7603 I understand the availability but to say we despise soft woods is a misconception that people have. Now I have no issues burning soft woods, pines mostly due to availability, and I'm even going to make some firewood from those trees that I am having cut down in my yard. I just wouldn't use it in my house fireplace due to cooler burning temperatures that lead to creosote-creating smoke which is a safety hazard.
