That was me shunting it. That was only half the train. The second half was brought in once the first part had been loaded and removed. It was bloomin hot that day too......

It looks like there's a fair bit of shunting to do on that site. Only half the train at a time into the loading pad, and that has to be split onto two sidings. I used to like watching the aggregates trains at Tolworth being shunted and run around

The train does require alot of shunting due to the layout of the yard. We split the train in half on arrival then bring the first part in. The rear part get a left in the siding that runs parallel to the old station. The first bit gets split in half between the two Sidings on the loading pad. Once the first part is loaded, it gets drawn out in to the loop. The loco then detaches, and collects the part left earlier. It then draws it in to the other loop line. It then cuts off, and crosses over, then propels the loaded part into the siding by the station. It then cuts off and attaches to the empty set in the loop. Once attached the loco then propels the empties on to the loading pad and splits the wagons as needed. Once this part is loaded, the loco goes and collects the loaded wagons left in the siding by the station. It the pulls them in to the loop, runs round, then sets back and collects the wagons on the loading pad.

Great video. I was the one driving the shovel loading it.

Thankyou Paul, didn't stay long enough to see it being loaded, I'm suprised they didn't build one of those conveyors that drop the shingle into the boxes as opposed to shovelling it in. Not sure if these yard clips will be possible when the access road is finished? Kind regards

Trainmania100 I have no idea what’s happening with the access road I’m afraid. Loading actually didn’t take too long. We had two shovels on it and the buckets can hold around 8 ton so not too bad. Was really interesting to see them shunting though, and good to see freight trains back into Newhaven port again.

Paul, lucky lad. I've seen videos of coal trains being loaded by loading shovels from loading pads. It was done surprisingly quickly. The shovels did have large coal buckets on them. I've watched the 360s loading ballast onto Network Rail wagons at Eastleigh. Often thought great job, loading trains while watching trains go by. Beats driving ADTs on some boring muck shift or landfill site. I worked for a while on the incinerator site just up the road from here. It was before Days also had a terminal there next to it. Before the incinerator it been in the past the site of what was once RMCs terminal for landing sea dredged aggregates. The sand went to RMC depots at Tolworth or Crawley.

Neil Crawford I use to work next door to RMC at what was UMA. RMC had left only a few months before I started. I was there for about 8 years till they shut the place. Conways have both the yards now.

Ok so they’ve just relayed these sidings specifically for these freight trains so why did they bother relaying the third rail where the marine station used to be concidering it’s just been officially closed

Whilst not in passenger service, passenger trains can turn around at the old marine station. In fact marine station has actually been closed to the public for a number of years. Train services down the Seaford branch are around half hourly service, but with reversals at Newhaven marine, you could actually get more passenger services, that terminate at Newhaven harbour, and then reverse at marine (whilst not in use) Also worth noting that a number of non passenger maintenance trains run using the third rail electric too (class 73 locomotives),so instead of holding up the Seaford line they can be reversed at marine siding instead of Seaford :-)
