Here’s a video review of a First Alert Auto 5 fire extinguisher. First I give an explanation of the extinguisher itself then I test it on a live fire to see how it performs in action and will give a recommendation from there. Please note that I am not sponsored by First Alert for this review.
Disclaimer: I bought this extinguisher with my own money to test and review to give you an accurate result on how it performs. If you are in the market for a fire extinguisher and are watching this review, I recommend taking notes to the details and hear my overall rating of each fire extinguisher that I review. Is this fire extinguisher right for the intended application? You be the judge.
The First Alert Auto 5 model is one of First Alert’s smallest fire extinguishers in their lineup and is designated for automotive use. This particular extinguisher is a compact, lightweight, budget friendly, easy to use unit for those wanting to carry a fire extinguisher in their vehicle. This compact fire extinguisher is suitable for use in small cars up to full size pick ups. While mounting hardware is not included, the holding bracket for this extinguisher can be attached in any location desired and it securely holds the unit in place. The mounting bracket also protects the top of the extinguisher to protect from any bumps that could accidentally discharge the unit when not needed. The little green button on top of the unit serves as the pressure gauge, when pushed down, it should spring back up under sufficient pressure. This unit is also a one time use only extinguisher. Once you discharge it or when it hits the 12 year mark, discharge the unit fully then place it in the trash and replace the unit.
This fire extinguisher is filled with 1.38 pounds of Plus-Fifty C sodium bicarbonate dry chemical and is pressurized to 100 psi. This agent is only effective on class B and C fires only. (Class B fires are flammable liquid fires. Class C fires involve live electrical hazards). This extinguisher has a UL Rating of 5B:C meaning that the unit can extinguisher up to 5 square feet of flammable liquids and the agent contained does not conduct electricity back at the operator.
After doing the live fire test and watching back the footage, I can say that the extinguisher worked very well especially for being one of the cheapest extinguishers you can buy. I would say for the pros that the unit is very easy to use and it had a pretty lengthy discharge time after putting out the fire repeatedly. The only negative I’ve found with this unit is with the very short discharge nozzle I did have to get pretty close to the fire to put it out. While that might be a minor thing with a very small fire, if you are dealing with a larger fire going up to the UL rating of this unit which can put out much more heat than the fire you saw in this video, then this extinguisher may not be capable of dealing with it without getting burned from the high heat.
Overall this is actually a great little fire extinguisher and if you pick one up, I thoroughly recommend pairing it with another fire extinguisher due to its small capacity for added safety. This unit is also a good training extinguisher for those wanting to learn and practice using a fire extinguisher without breaking the bank on costs.
My Rating:
4/5 stars
