"It's over Johnny. It's over!" "Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me, huh? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!" Fun Fact: The large piece of rotten canvas that Rambo finds in the woods and cuts into a makeshift coat was in fact not a movie prop, but a real piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production. Since there was only one piece, Sylvester Stallone joked about how the canvas became a treasured prop on the set. After filming ended, Stallone kept the rotten canvas and still has it in his possession to this very day. Crew Shout-Out Fact: According to Sylvester Stallone in the DVD commentary, the names of the people on Rambo's team in Vietnam (as read by Col. Trautman) are actually names of various people of the film's crew, including make-up artist Michael Westmore and costume designer Tom Bronson. Art Before Ego Fact: Sylvester Stallone hated the first cut of the film so much that he tried to buy the film back and destroy it. When he couldn't do that, he suggested that the producers cut much of his part and let the rest of the characters tell the story. That cut the movie time in half and set a precedent for future action movies.

GROSS but cool fact: 8:01 that filthy, greasy, moldy tarp Rambo is cutting into a Poncho isn't a movie prop, he genuinely found it right there while filming this scence, including the old rope he used as a belt. Originally, Rambo was supposed to only wear that sleeveless T-shirt but they didn't realise how cold it would be. Stallone was so cold that he figured this is something a person like Rambo would actually do to survive, so he went all in and improvised this scene as they were filming it. He actually kept the Poncho he made as a memento of his time filming there. The wardrobe deparment made extra Ponchos from the remaining part of that filthy tarp Stallone found, to maintain that specific look throughout filming. They also used some of it to add an extra layer underneath, to keep Stallone warmer during filming.

Right. The Sheriff was looking forward to settling down and retiring after a not so great life. He actually was fairly decent to Rambo at first, including getting him something to eat (even if the placed served him a nasty burger). But Rambo made the choice to go back into town. The sheriff was kind of a mirror image of Little Bill in "The Unforgiven". Both were trying to settle down, but Teasle wasn't a bad guy while Little Bill was.

I’m glad you identified early on that the character had PTSD. It eluded many who thought it purely was an action film. Sure, there’s plenty of action, but the meaning was always deeper. When Rambo finds out Danforth is dead in the beginning, his character is defeated. That’s why he said “Back here there’s nothing.” Everything the machine sent him to love, fight for and protect was gone. He came back to a life he could no longer recognize. Cheers to a great reaction! 🍻

26:26 - A tired, hungry war veteran suffering from PTSD finds out that the last of his Viet Nam unit died the year prior from cancer. On his way to locate food, he is arrested, clubbed, kicked, hosed down and restrained forcefully. He finally snaps, excapes jail, and is hunted into the mountains by police, dogs, helicopter and National Guard. He successfully defends himself by incapacitating all his armed pursuers. A grenade-launcher forces him deeper into a cave complex with no obvious exit/s except for the entrance of the cave. He eventually escapes the cave system, hijacks a truck, beats a heavy roadblock, returns to the town and destroys the place. He blows up a gas station, car dealership, and a guns & ammo store. All damage incurred could have been avoided by providing access to a hot meal and hospitality earlier in the day.

I had almost forgotten that Sly used to be young ;) An iconic role and a much deeper dive than you might first expect. Over the years, this movie has reminded me that all is seldom as it appears. One of the things that has always struck me about this movie (and there are many), is how little control the sheriff has over his men. You would think he would have noticed, but I guess he was too busy spending all his time running for re-election.

Sheriff chose not to see it, maybe he couldn't being just as crazy. Let his war buddy run wild and bully the lower ranked offices. Buddy could 'monkey paw' an order and no matter how wrong, it was allowed. Friendship with the boss. Plain fear of his crazy ass from the other guys. The weekend warriors / soldiers, well they were something else. Not much to do with the cops. A bit smarter about staying safe. I wouldn't really call soldiers the Sheriff's men. So of course they don't gotta listen to him.
