Chapter 1: 1:42 after my intro
In Sandra Newman's book, Julia, Julia Worthing is a fully developed character with a complex backstory. Julia Worthing is no longer simply 1984 Winston Smith’s lover. The reader learns more about how the Party came to power and the characters' motivations. Characters are written multi- dimensional unlike in George Orwell’s 1984. Yet Newman's research and how she weaves in aspects of Orwell's novel, will bring back memries to those readers of 1984 with great satisfaction.
Newman's world-building is also superior to Orwell's, and the book's themes of communism, controlling the masses using fear and scarcity are relevant to modern Ukraine and Russia. The alteration of words, the ubiquity of cameras, and the spread of misinformation are also relevant to the current world. Today, social classes and nationalities are more set at odds than ever in my lifetime. It's enough to wonder if both 1984 and Julia were written to be cautionary tales.
Speaking of cautions, this is a high school- adult book. The first chapter is clean/tame, but future chapters have very mature subject matter. I've already heard rumors that it will be adapted to film.
I heard of Julia a novel on NPR and recommend giving that article a read/listen.
