My high school Band Teacher recorded this on a small tape recorder in the 90s -- the big band version of First Circle played by the UNT one o'clock jazz ensemble. I captured the audio as a teenager in 1999 from an old cassette, so I'm sorry about the not-amazing quality... but it's a scorching performance and I've had it all to myself for 20+ years so thought I should share. If anyone knows details about who/when this would have been I'd love to know. THAT PIANO SOLO!!! THOSE THUNDER DRUMS!!!
Update from Reddit: "Here's the One O'Clock Lab Band playing it back in 1986, under the direction of Neil Slater-the arrangement sounds similar, although it's definitely a different recording (the piano solo is different, for starters).
The personnel in the 1986 recording is listed as follows:
Saxophones: Jeff Robbins, David Pietro, John Nugent, Ray Herrmann, James Farnsworth
Trumpets: Mike Williams, John Veurink, Bob Lark, Magnus Broo, Todd Davidson
Trombones: Steve Wiest, Scott Whitfield, Bret Zvacek, Eddie Clark, Nate Lynch
Rhythm: Stefan Karlsson (piano), Bruce Saunders (guitar), Tony Scherr (bass), Dan Wojciechowski (drums), Lee Ann Harris (percussion)" Bob Curnow's L.A. Big Band "The Music of Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays" 1994. Well worth the listen
