Subtle detail, but I feel it is worth mentioning, Moiraine specifically glances around at the EF5. I've seen people on Reddit complain about why she did this, like she has some kind of Foretelling. But remember she specifically came there looking for people of a certain age. Nynaeve was probably included in the glance due to her latent strength in the One Power.

Note on the clothing. There is clearly a distinct style throughout. Everyone has V-shaped necklines, most people have overlapping fabric on the front. The clothes are all loose-fitted, but still following body shapes. They are all in natural colours and fabrics, and there's almost no embellishments at all. There are only button loops, no button holes. All the shoulders are soft/rounded. The necklines are almost all without a collar, and the few that have something towards a collar, are never folded. The only exceptions (on purpose?) are Rand, in a slightly unnatural shade of blue, and Egwene, who has slightly sharper shoulders. Most people are only wearing one layer, although there's a few vests, some aprons and an occasional jacket. Similarly most sleeves widen out, although not all. Combined with short hair for men, braided hair for women and very natural make-up, it makes for a very earthy, humble and practical look throughout.

One of my biggest gripes with the original series is the fact that the friendship between Mat, Rand, and Perrin is really underdeveloped, specially compared to some other friendships and relationships later in the series. Which is why I was really happy when I saw that Rand and Perrin interaction in the clip. Just the fact that Perrin would ask about how things are between Rand and Egwene, added to Stradowski and Rutherford having some good chemistry with each other makes me already like their friendship better in the show than in the books. Love what you do, but just a little thing that you said about the spurs and Mandrab, Spurs are used when first training horses that are unresponsive to leg command. Trained horses all it takes are shifts of weight in your seat and very slight adjustments to leg positions. Spurs were made famous by the cowboys because they were constantly training the wild horses they caught so they always wore spurs. I know this is not a big deal at all for the show and is iconic symbol for North America, just as an equestrian your comment irked me the wrong way since your comment about them and Mandrab is completely false.

Ooooh. Okay as an equestrian and also a history enthusiast I want to disagree with you haha. In general, you're 100% correct. However, with armored horses (be it extra padding or actual armor), Knights and other cavalry would use spurs because the horse was unable to feel the leg pressure etc due to the armor. So the spurs were used to reach to the horse to give cues.

They're about the same height, yeah (Josha and Marcus that is). I listened to the TDR today and in one of the first chapters RJ depicts Rand as about half a head taller than Perrin. But it's not a big deal at all; he's supposed to be tall and, importantly, taller than the average Two Rivers folk. I'd say the huge bulky blacksmith's apprentice is not average. Rosamund Pike is not short by any means, I don't think it'll take anything from Moiraine's character anyway. Plus, there's plenty of camera tricks to make them appear closer to what the director wants, if it's deemed important. I hope the Aiel are tall though. Except Enaila. 😁

I believe Moiraine did not intend to announce to everyone that she is an Aes Sedai .... if you watch again you will see .... When Moiraine approaches Marine and is requesting two beds and clean sheets she is flashing the ring to Marin only (The camera is from a low angle with the ring in the front and Marine's face behind it looking down at the ring), the scene is obviously suggesting it was for Marine's Eyes only! Because Moiraine knows people don't say no to Aes Sedai and wanted to make sure her request is not refused... But Marine did not get the hint and she outed Moiraine to everyone by using the Aes Sedai title probably thinking it would be respectful... Moiraine is like please do not say it out loud and taken by surprise that Marin was not subtle ... surprised to be outed and taken out of balance Moirane then walks to the fireplace as if to warm up her hands but she is actually composing herself before turning back again to face everyone now when they all know who she is ... yet Moraine is all Aes Sedai calm and serenity even though lots of hostile looking faces, to break the awkward silence Marin jump to help by being welcoming and asking Moirane to follow her... or did I get that wrong?

I have what I “think” is an accurate theory on the reaction in the Inn on Lan’s entry, particularly Nynaeve’s. My suspicion is they are bringing in the mystery black cloaked rider that the boys see prior to this and there has been discussions about it not only with the Village Council as described in the book but with the Women’s Circle possibly even right before this scene while they were all sitting around that table. A stranger walking in with a dark cloak would immediately raise that kind of suspicion hence everyone staring nervously, Perrin standing up straighter, Tam shifting to where he can leap iff the bench if needed and Nynaeve calling Lan out while grasping the hilt of her belt knife.

I'm so surprised how every reviewer I've watched has misinterpreted Lan & Moraine's entry. THINK Secret Service! There are always people who enter the building directly ahead of the President. As her Warder Lan is her Bodyguard. And this is a building they've never entered, and a people they've never met. At this point he and Moraine have been together for over 20yrs. They don't have to speak a word to one another about how they'll enter. They've done this dozens of times over by now. Look at Lan closely when he enters. He scans the room ever so subtlety. But make no mistake, he made note of every person in that room and identified every capable man, every person of authority, and every possible threat before he takes his hood off to introduce Moraine. I'm guessing that Moraine was using the One Power to place a cloak about herself similar to Greymen such that while she wasn't invisible everyones eyes would slide over to Lan and not notice her until she hears him use her name telling her its safe to enter.
@ChrisCapel
3 жыл бұрын
Their entrance is corny as hell and seriously concerning when it comes to tone. TONE, guys. Not "accuracy to the books", so stop using that as an excuse. Their entrance is clumsy and totally on the nose. The staging is like some high school play. Anyone entering a bar and standing to the side waiting for someone to address them so they can dramatically pull their hood back and announce themselves like some self-aware badass is totally bizarre. Maybe for a character who is full of themselves and needs validation, but Lan? Yeah, no. Also, I don't care what color the Emond's Fielders are, but they should all be the SAME color. What podunk village in the middle of the wilderness have you ever seen that's got every color of the rainbow in it? That's not a thing. The 5 are taken from some homogeneous village into the huge world around them and they're changed by it. By seeing OTHER PEOPLE WHO DON'T LOOK LIKE THEM. Ticking social justice boxes just tramples any kind of realism or logic. Logic/rules are the key to making fantasy feel not cheesy. World building is everything in fantasy and sci-fi and Robert Jordan was a master of it. J.K. Rowling, Tolkien, etc. The reason these stories stand the test of time is because we BELIEVE the worlds. Perrin is taller than Rand? Really? Welp, there goes a rule. Emond's Field is in the middle of nowhere but somehow contains every shade of skin color? How? Why? There goes another rule. GoT succeeded because of its grit and believability. So far, everything on a set looks like a CW show here. Rand and Perrin's acting was great, but the INTRODUCTION of Lan and Moiraine... Zero mystery or intrigue. No subtlety. Just, "Look at us. How badass are we?!" The show will fall short, and the fandom's blind love for any level of quality is frankly pathetic. This show deserves 10 seasons with record-breaking budgets. If you build it they will come. They didn't so they won't. And what's extra frustrating is YOU HAVE THE BLUEPRINT IN GOT! Whatever. Hollywood is a silly place.
@thebkg

Speaking of someone full of themselves... Accuracy to the Books?? Umm... This scene isn't in the books. Tone?? You can't fully appreciate tone from 2 mins of a 60 episode. We don't know how much lead up to this scene, what the emotional tone was when we get to it. Etc. The Director could have good cause for moving the scene forward this way. I did not find it corny, though I know many did. Lan walked in and observed the room before he spoke or removed his hood. He did this because he and Moraine had never been there before. He's not going to allow her to come in until he's checked it for threats first. Keeping his hood on obstructed others view of him while he carefully examined them. I do agree that it's more believable that Edmunds Field would have been less diverse. I don't necessarily agree with the decision, but I also understand that in our current sociopolitical atmosphere the show would have a much smaller following if they didn't do it that way. But... We Knew this was the case over a year ago. Well over a year actually. So why are you making such a big deal of this now??

@@thebkg I agree with some of your points. The issue is that it wasn't until now that we've gotten this many details. I personally do not enjoy how diverse the emond's fielders are. Honestly, Perrin looks perfect and I would've loved a village of people who looked like him. I'm not choked up about the height thing, but I agree with the original comment where it seems like they're just checking boxes off a list of social justice and wokeness. Honestly, it takes SO MUCH away from the beauty of Jordan's story. Jordan explored the concepts of culture, race, and gender at such a profoundly deep level and some of the things we've seen so far just feel like they're filling in his depth with a shallow paint of over the top wokism. I hope they prove me wrong and deliver a beautiful show that does WOT justice, but I've lost most of my enthusiasm and hope for the show at this point. :/

I have to respectfully, but very strongly, disagree with you about Lan's spurs. Mostly about spurs in general. Good riders almost never use spurs. They may sometimes use them to help break an untrained horse, but even this is rare for a good rider. But a great rider with their long time, very well trained, warhorse would NEVER use spurs. They would communicate almost entirely in body on body contact, mostly with the riders legs. Spurs are used, mostly, by poor riders with little to no respect for their horse. That Lan would even own any is unthinkable to me. I don't remember actually seeing any in the clip however. Heard them for sure but idk if he's really wearing spurs. I sure hope not.

I don't like that they're exposing ajah colors to the world. It always struck me as something that was mostly an internal thing to the AS, and the whole point was always to _try_ to project a unified front publicly. I also don't get the point of this change. As the viewer, there is no reason you should instantly _know_ someone's ajah. You should be able to deduce based on actions, words and company, but that is all flushed down the drain now. It's just extremely "show over tell", and perhaps a bit condescending towards the audience. A confusing choice to be sure.

Looking forward to seeing your episode videos once the show comes out. Sounds like you'll have a good mixture both for newcomers and book readers. About the easter egg videos, Rafe said that certain characters they had to cut or condense they tried to hint at by giving names to very small characters or even extras, so it'll be interesting if you can go through the credits of each episode and point them out. I'm sure you'll have plenty of details, hints and foreshadowing in each episode, since Rafe and the team are always looking at the story from the point of view of the entire series (which is very appropriate for WoT, Jordan weaved in crazy foreshadowing throughout the books)

Nothing in this comes straight from the books! This scene is only mentioned by Mat as "They showed up last night on horses." And she's not snubbing Nynaeve, either. @@WoTUp While I don't disagree with your general point about scenes and venues changing, they've released screen caps of Moiraine walking around Emond's Field, while it's still intact, during the day. Dirty clothes are overrated and misguided, there are lots of misguided beliefs that villagers and medieval people were dirty as if they had nothing else to do but roll in a dirt patch all day! the truth is people in those times were all about parading and displaying their best clothing like peacocks .... and when they got dirty they would not be seen before changing ... they cared more about what people will think and say about them than we do nowadays...Sunday mass and outings people were always seen in their best outfits ... one thing is true though ... they did smell more than we do nowadays... but they did not walk around looking visibly filthy! even nobles and royals who were looking immaculate still smelled, so they used aromatic oils and perfumes to cover it... When it comes to colors, Got gritty and desaturated style is artistic but is ridiculously inaccurate and misleading, medieval people loved colors, everything from clothing to tapestries and murals was vibrant and colorful, they painted walls in bright colors ... the world would only look desaturated like in the Game of Thrones if you were color blind or had some serious eye infection that prevented you from seeing the world as it is!

First off, thanks for the detailed recap, great job as always. I was pretty thrilled when I saw the clip, but there's two things I'm not particularly happy about - at least until there's more context. First off, Lan and Moiraine's entry feels to me really awkward from a... cinematography standpoint. I get that two strangers, dressed as they are (and armed in Lan's case) would cause the village folk to turn their heads, but that announcement felt really forced. I'll wait for context, as I said, it's just... wooden. The other thing I don't like too much is how Marin recognized Moiraine's ring instantly. How the Two Rivers are isolated from the goings of the rest of the world and the distrust common folk have for Áes Sedái is really important for the world building in my view. That being said, all is well, these are comparatively minor details. I just have to wonder why they did it.
