My first day at Unitec was a mix of cultural immersion and academic focus. It started with a traditional Māori pōwhiri, a welcoming ceremony that was both powerful and moving. As I stood with the other new students, I was greeted by the sound of a karanga, a call that welcomed us, and the tangata whenua performed a haka that really resonated with a sense of strength and unity. This experience made me feel connected to the culture and the community at Unitec right from the start.
After the pōwhiri, I headed into five hours of lectures. The sessions were intense and packed with information, giving me a solid foundation for my studies in automotive engineering. It was a long day, but it gave me a clear sense of what to expect in the weeks ahead and fueled my motivation to dive into the coursework.
