My roommate had one. Here’s a couple things I learned about it. 1) you must let it warm up before turning it off, even if you move it out of the garage for a second, you’ll risk flooding the engine. 2) upper end power loss is either the seals not holding pressure, or worn out plugs/coils (hopefully the latter).

For the years 2009 - 2011 (second generation) you MUST use a factory Mazda oil filter. The series 2 engine has extra oil ports in the rotors and a high pressure oil pump. An of the shelf filter is VERY likely to fail. Additionally, the series 2 engine is far more reliable but definitely still finicky. Always warm the engine or short shift (under 3K shifts) till the tach moves to ful rpm and at shut down rev the engine to 3K for at least 15 seconds. This is where the high pressure oil pump becomes most effective and doing this bathes the rotors in oil before shutting off the engine. Thanks

Yeah I spent 6 grand on my 2004 RX8 and 6 months later the engine died lmao. Another 6 grand later and it runs amazing now. Your R3 though is definitely way down on power though. Things I would do for full power is there are 3 solenoids that open up at certain RPMs to allow more air into the intake. They are behind the upper intake manifold on the left side. Replace all three of those. You can find them for cheap online, don't spend the hundreds of dollars Mazda asks for. They should be called the SSV, VDI, and AIR solenoids. Also definitely do spark plugs and coils. If that doesn't fix it, I'd either get it compression tested, or make sure you are getting enough fuel (injectors/pump). Should be good then! Happy brapping

@JR Garage I own also a RX-8. The problem you got is quite common. Best way to solve it, get a Set of new Spark Plugs and Coils. Black Halo Racing should be the perfect adress in the States, to order the spark plugs and a set of Upgrade Coil Packs. But also check the SSV (secondary shutter valve). The 13b Renesis got a variable intake manifold and the SSV opens usually at high rpm. You got no power there, so it is possible, that the SSV doesn't work, because it's stuck or broken. Google it and you will find instructions to get it working again or replacing it. To get rid of the DSC etc lights, just turn your steering wheel completly to the left, to right and centre it. That will calabrate the steering angle sensor. At the next Start Up, those lights should disappear. After replacing spark plugs and coils, you should check the warm start behaviour of your RX-8. When the heated up after a nice drive, turn it off, wait 20 seconds and start it up again. If it start within 2-3 seconds, everything is fine and the enginge has good compression. I hope, i was able to help you :-)

My 2003 rx8 had 97,000 miles before I lost the car in an accident we’re it got totaled in 2011. I was active duty stationed in Colorado and my family lived in Kentucky. I never had a single mechanical issue with the motor during the 8 years that I drove the piss out of my rx8. I red lined my rx8 daily and I hit 150mph multiple times driving across Kansas on i70 every time I would make the 1,400 mile one way trip to see my family. I made that trip 18 times with my rx8 during the 6 years I was stationed in Co. I had a AEM cold air intake, ACT clutch kit, ACT streetlight flywheel WITH THE COUNTER WIEGHT. That caused many problems when people swapped out the flywheel but never swapped the counter weight to keep the rotating mass properly balanced. Cat delete pipe with HKS hi power single outlet, Tien flex pro suspension and complete brake upgrade. I know many people who still own their rx8s and have had little to no problems what so ever. There are 2 reasons the rx8 failed in the US. 1st The rx8 is a 6 port motor and it had like a variable chamber control. The control would slide to open the secondary port under load and would close when not needed to help with fuel consumption. You could say it was like VTEC for a rotary lol. When people did not regularly changed the oil like they were supposed to these chambers would get gummed up and the valves would stick and you would have immediate power loss. It was a lot of work and required taking a lot of stuff apart to get to those chambers. The second issue was the rotary had been out of the market for so long most people new nothing about them. All they saw was a 1.3 liter 4 door sport car that was cute. Everyone thought they were great on gas but in reality they got about the same gas mileage as the mustang gt. So people would not go over 4000 rpm to save on gas, but the rx8 has oil passages that do not lubricant until you go passed 6000 rpm. So the lack of rpm caused major carbon build up and the motor was starved of oil eating up bearings. That is why the rx8 had to get so many motors replaced until it was eventually pulled off the market. Those 2 issues is what led to its demise. The 1.3 liter come from measuring only 1 side of the rotor face. If you measure all 3 sides it actually comes out to 3.2 or 3.5. My memory is not what it used to be. The mechanical engineers who decided on this said you could not measure all 3 sides of the rotor because they share the same cylinder ( rotor housing ) or combustion chamber. Even though all 3 sides of the rotor face is sealed by the side seals and apex seals. Their reason was in a piston engine the pistons are in the own individual cylinders and all for cycles of combustion are completed separate from one another so they felt you could not measure it they same way. The lack of education and understanding of the rotary engine when it came back to market in 2003 in the US is what set it up for failure. I share this to help you guys have a better understanding. I grew up around rotaries, I’ve owned a few and I knew a few people who were certified in Japan to be the Mazda dealer master techs for the rotary engines. Hope it helps.

Change the oil again and throw that filter in the trash, go to mazda and buy the correct filter. A genuine mazda oil filter for the series 2 is THE ONLY FILTER you should ever use. Using anything but a genuine mazda series 2 RX-8 oil filter may cause significant issues with oil pressure and bearing wear (doesn't matter who makes it, they are all trash besides the sub-$10 one mazda has in stock at every dealer). Also while driving keep rpm above 3,000 AT ALL TIMES. Driving a rotary below 3,000 rpm regularly will lead to excessive carbon build up and get even worse fuel economy. It's not a camry, don't treat it like one. The sub-19,000 original mile engine in my R3 I just did a very thorough refresh on was driven and treated just like a POS camry and had an absurd amount of carbon caked on the rotors. Luckily it was pristine otherwise, but that can/will lead to catastrophic failure if a large chunk breaks loose inside of the engine which is why the number one rule for driving a rotary is to never baby it continuously. Beat the shit out of it regularly and it'll be just fine.

If plugs n coils don't sort it check out fuel delivery . Beast of a car when they's running correctly and most rotary engines need a rebuild every 50 k miles so could be in need of one Best wishes

DONT USE AN AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER!!! only use the mazda oil filter for the 2009-2011 rx8s because of the highly increased oil pressure that all aftermarket oil filters cannot handle!

piece of advice with rx8 ownership, let it warm up for about 10 minutes (generally under) before driving until the red bar at the top of the tachometer goes away, I daily my 08 rx8 and have had no problems
