What about stuck bolts that have to use a torch and welder in some cases. But if it’s all new parts and you know what you’re doing putting it together is easy and generally less messy. I believe what you are saying is knowing what parts do what and go where is often learned by taking apart.

Back in 1985, when I started auto shop class, that's how we learned. We were given 1 day to go to the junk yard, pull the engine and transmission, and then we had to strip them down, diagnose any and all issues, then, if possible, rebuild them. The best part was if we turned a profit, we got to keep it or use it for after-hours shop time. The 1st business I started was servicing teachers and city cop cars from 3 to 6 on school days and all day Saturday. I was making 30k a year 1990 when I graduated.

Nice way to learn. Pro tip: resist the urge to turn it upside down to remove the oil pan... this way, debris, shavings, broken pieces, dirt, etc.. stays in the oil pan instead of being dumped into the rotating assembly.
@Tom89194

Doesn't really matter if you are on a complete teardown and everything is going to be disassembled, especially if the block is not going to be used due to block damage. Partial teardowns and using the block without a deep clean? yeah you might want to take the pan off without dumping any crap in the block by turning it upside down.

Absolutely true even for a lot simpler small engines. For this, I would have at least 2-4 video camera running plus the still camera shots till I knew every single piece and fastener all in one big box or flat surface.
