So much fun to watch this video, the way how you describe about food, talking to people and your reactions while experiencing new things just so funny (in a good way). Love it. BTW, Chinese people don't usually greet each other with 你好,吃了吗/hello, have you eaten. We just greet with 你好/hello, or just greet with 吃过了吗/吃了吗/have you eaten. Normally at about meal time people will ask 吃过了吗 as a way to greet, if not nearby meal time, chinese don't greet that way either.

In the past, China was very poor, and it was a luxury for people to have a full meal, so they would use "Have you eaten?" to wish people a good life. But now that people are well-off and having enough food is no longer a problem, this way of greeting has been gradually abandoned.

@@JackAynsleyTravel "Chi le ma" means "Eaten (Had breakfast/lunch/dinner) yet?". This phrase has once been the most straightforward salutation to people in ancient difficult times when getting oneself and his/her family well fed was the most important and sometimes challenging goal of life and also a significant symbol of well-being for most people. As the chinese society develops, having three decent meals everyday is no longer a top priority of people's concern. In fact, using this phrase to greet people of a city lifestyle nowadays would probably bring a confusion more and more frequently, especially when it is not close to the meal hours. 😁

Hey! Thank you for the advise, I am always learning so I will try to remember this when I am not in Beijing! If you went to Beijing would you use this phrase?
@natearchibald5835

Bro,When I go to Beijing to talk to strangers, I won't use this phrase. It is a very old way of greeting. Some elderly people in northern China use it occasionally, but young people nowadays basically don't use it.

Thank you very much! I can just speak a few phrases but I’m always learning, do you have any new phrases that would be useful?
I am native in Chengdu, I like your video, and I feel you are so brave to try everything. One suggestion. You should visit San Xing Dui bronze museum which is one hour drive from Chengdu downtown. I am positive it will change your mind about human history after visit it, period.

I like your videos very much. You are always so brave to try new things instead of looking at them with prejudice. Just like Chengdu food, it is far less spicy than it looks, but full of aroma when u eat it

Yes for sure, you would think that the only feeling is spice but there is so much dimension to the food, it's so tasty!

delicious “hao chi” (好吃) is the standard way to pronounce it. But in our sichuan dialect, it’s “hao ci”. So when people speak mandarin with that accent, it might confuse you a bit.

From a psychological perspective, addiction to spicy food can be seen as a fascination with calculated risk-taking. It's the sense that you recognize the danger but believe it's manageable, and successfully navigating this risk provides a sense of thrill and satisfaction. This is a key reason why people become addicted to spicy food.😊

LOL, very interesting video! Actually 'chi le ma' (ask if they have eaten or not) is the grand parents' greeting way, even parents don't use that anymore, and you can say 'ni hao', and that's good enough, haha.

@@JackAynsleyTravel all the happening places are in the southern part of the town. Looks like you are in the northern part of the city that’s mostly elder folks. Take metro line #1 south to financial center, walk west or take metro line #5 to jiaozidadao station and walk east to financial center “twin towers “ there are nice shops and stores along the road (Jiufang mall is a great place for reasonably priced nice food). Very pretty area. The bar area is located near Shangri-la hotel along the river. The newest open air shopping area with a nice walk and nice skyline is SKP, across it the street from global center.
