If you're doing a holiday theme, you can't do Christmas without doing The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" and "The Christmas Song". They did a whole album of holiday music which I play starting Thanksgiving Day continuing through New Years'. Karen's always been able to make you "feel". Not all singers can make you "feel". The radio is filled with songs that are testaments to the ordinary. But in 1971, The Carpenters beat out The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Jackson 5, and Chicago for having the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Group. That's how really extraordinary they are, because other musicians in the academy vote for the winners, and Karen and Richard beat out The Beatles, The Greatest Group of All Time. Amazing! You seem to me to be like a young Richard Carpenter with your interest in music. I hope the future holds for you as much success if not more as The Carpenters' had. Maybe someone will be talking about your music 40 years from now and doing reviews. Wouldn't that be fantastic!

Actually there were two Carpenters Christmas albums, "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old Fashioned Christmas", but the second one was released a year after Karen's death and her vocals on there are mainly outtakes from the first project. (But of course Karen Carpenter outtakes are better than most singers' intended finished product. Several of her classic vocal tracks were work leads, simple rough cuts sung just to familiarize the band with a song. Karen though would just sing them faultlessly the first time out. Her vocal on "Superstar" is like that. With the lyrics read off a piece of paper, that vocal, which ended up as a single and became a big hit, is the very first time she ever sang the song...)

Years later in one of the many documentaries, RICHARD said that he believed that Karen FELT inside, in her heart, that she was a drummer who sang. No where is there a comparison between her drumming and singing coming from Karen or Richard. Being her brother and business partner, he has some insight into how she felt...what she may have thought. When they started out, she was the band's drummer. That was her passion. But...in order to succeed in the business, and since she did have the ability, that's the direction the band had to take. Great reaction. Next: We've Only Just Begun

Two big hits were "We've Only Just Begun' ("White lace and promises..."- played a lot at wedding receptions) and 'Close to You". If you like covers, they also sang the Beatles 'Ticket to Ride' in the typical Carpenters' style. They've had many great songs, but even their so-so stuff is easy on the ears and pleasant to listen to. While they had their audience back then, music was trending elsewhere. It's nice that their talents are being recognized in an era of Auto-Tune and synthesized beats. Can't go wrong with a real instruments and great vocals. ALSO, can't discount Richard's talents behind the recordings. He played a big part in their success that many people don't appreciate..

Thanks, Dicon - I'm making my comments without hearing all of yours... I always thought the lyrics were a little "simple" and "rhyme-y" in this one -- and I also felt that "I always wind up here with you -- the one who loves me" - might be referring to her brother, Richard - not at all in a creepy way - but they were very close, and he always stood by her, and was a huge influence -- she was, as you already know, interested in being a drummer - and was quite talented... but her vocal ability could not go unnoticed, and it was Richard that pushed her forward on that..

If you are going to do Halloween theme music. You absolutely have to do Alice Cooper’s, Welcome to my Nightmare album. It great creepy music, not a bad song on the whole album. Trust me on the this one. Thanks again

Karen had a magical voice, but there was always an ache in it. Loved her, and miss her terribly.

Love this song by Karen. There hasn’t been anyone with her type of voice since. It’s a wonderful song, so simple yet speaks volumes. We’ve all been there. Just blue and sad and yet if you have someone who loves you that’s all you need. Thanks for your great reaction.

"Her voice is so incredible". Those words have probably been spoken by everyone who's ever heard her sing.

this song is about being in a rut and having someone there to remind you that it is never as bad as it seems. The female Phil Collins! Drummer and lead singer :D

Hi, Daniel - another group considered unfashionable but I consider incredible is Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66. Also with a brilliant & sensitive female vocalist, Lani Hall. The musical arrangements are dynamic & always interesting. I think you’d have a few a-ha! moments.

Thank you for your heartfelt reviews of Carpenters' music. How about reviewing the Carpenters' sci-fi song, 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft' during your October / Fall / Halloween theme? (The single version is about 3 minutes long; the album version is about 7 minutes long) Other Autumn-ish songs by Karen & Richard include 'Yesterday Once More' & 'Only Yesterday.' To me, most of their songs draw out emotions of the heart, which are synonymous with the colorful changes in season that peak in October and then are swept away. 'Bless The Beasts and The Children' is another great Carpenters' song to consider reviewing. I think you would also enjoy reviewing their version of the Beatles' song, 'Ticket To Ride.' Thank you again, Daniel.
