Underappreciated these days is what, exactly, he was doing during that weird part. Analog synthesizers changed their sound by using filters, modulators, and controls to shape the sound wave. A particular setting of controls produced a specific sound and was referred to as a patch. One patch, for example, might resemble a piano or an organ or make a sound unique and unlike any other instrument. In the early days, patches were pretty fixed and only changed between songs, if at all, which is why in the early days of synth rock you'd see these huge stacks of three or four keyboards, so the player had access to all the different sounds he needed on each song. In this performance, Edgar Winters was manipulating those controls and envelopes while the sound was being generated, feeding back on the sound wave. He was using the analog controls to manually build and change the soundwave in the midst of performance.
@craigwiggins253
4 жыл бұрын
Yea i was going to comment on the 'analog' synth. Goes back to my late pre-teens. Even more impressive was Keith Emerson's setup. You needed schematics to be able to hook his up for a concert. To think now how everything is digital and so much more capable and compressed.
@submandave1125
4 жыл бұрын
@@craigwiggins253 Back in the very early days (think Emerson or Eno in the Roxy Music days) the synth was literally patched together with short jumper cables to apply the various filters and envelopes in the order desired, not unlike arranging guitar effects pedals. It looked like a switchboard operator patching calls (that's where the term came from). Getting the patch and setting just right for the sound you wanted was a long process, so once it was set you tried not to mess with it too much. Being able to save patches and recall them was a huge breakthrough. I had a board in early '80s that had lots of factory patches as well as several user defined slots available. It even came with a tape recorder interface that allowed you to save your patches or load them from cassette tape, similar to how early computers saved programs.

The greatest instrumental of our time - The band on this is Edgar Winter , Rick Derringer (Guitar), Dan Hartman (Bass) and Chuck Ruff (Drums). Produced by Rick Derringer who is a legend in his own right. Ronnie Montrose played some guitar on the original album (They Only Come Out at Night). There is tons to explore between Edgar and his brother Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer who all played together in the late 60's and early 70's . Dan Hartman was an amazing artist - singer songwriter and Chuck Ruff was one of the most amazing rock and jazz drummers in his time. Derringer has so many offerings that you can check out from the early hits like Hang On Sloopy, Fever and of course Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. Look up some of his live concert video and you will find some amazing guitar work. He is still going strong today after 50 years in the game ! KEEP ON ROCKIN

There is a video on You Tube of Rick Derringer (the guitarist here, and the producer of the album the studio version of Frankenstein was on) where he tells the story of recording the song. It was originally a 20 minute song called "Duel Drum Solo". The record company heard initial versions of the album, but didn't want the song on the album. Derringer and Edgar Winter thought it was the centerpiece of the record. So they started editing it. Got it down to 15 minutes. Then down to 12 minutes. Finally at a 5 minute edit they nailed it. Winter made a comment that there were so many edits on the tape it looked like it was patched together like Frankenstein. There you go!

Guitarist Rick Derringer (besides contributing some solos to early Steely Dan albums), was also part of the short-lived Johnny Winter And group, where he and Johnny would exchange guitar solos. Putting their guitar signals through Leslie speakers (rotating cabinets made for organs) made for some really Hendrixy type guitar sounds. (see "Guess I'll Go Away", "Prodigal Son", and "Nothing Left"). Edgar Winter also played sax and keyboards on the Johnny Winter album Second Winter, which was a 3 sided album.

Edgar and Johnny Winter did a song together called Tobacco Road that has Edgar on stationary keyboard and Johnny on guitar. But the best part of it (I think) is Edgar Winter’s vocals. Unf___jng believable! And I rarely use that type of language It’s a combo of blues, jazz, and rock. As good as Frankenstein, just that the emphasis is more on Edgar’s vocals and a guitar solo by the legendary Johnny Winter. I’ve just discovered your videos tonight when I saw you did a reaction to DOA. Your youthful enthusiasm really caught my attention so I’ve listened to a few more videos. Really like you and would like to see what you think about Tobacco Road.

Saw them when this song first came out at the Cheeta in Chicago. I was sufficiently overserved, had my mind right and the main thing that blew my mind is as the song started on a blacked out stage, 3 mars light began rotating on the top of light columns that raised out of the stage, as the madness proceeded. What a spectacle! and unlike in this video it was at concert volume and power.

Great reaction. The song is, literally, about it's title. It'smaking the Franstein monster. Hence the title. That's why there's all the the synthesizer & modulation. The part 2/3 of the way through where is is just using the modulater is 'the electricity to bring the monster to life'. The part after that with the heavy drum beats slowly,' the monster walking'..well you all figure out the rest.
