That high register string section is mimicking the sound of wires resonating from the wind. I didn’t think the lineman was listening to a phone line, I thought he was hearing the wires whine and was hearing voices in that sound. A great song. Deceptively simple but it has “pull”.

It's a great song, though to this day I think the strings are over-done in places. I'm pretty sure he's not listening in on someone's conversation - I mean, that doesn't really make a lot of sense if you think it through. It's simpler than that. He misses his lover. He "hears her voice wherever he goes" - not literally but metaphorically. And he's not going to see her anytime soon, because he's got a job that keeps him on the road - he's "still on the line."

I have listened to a gob of music over the last 40 yrs or so. All types. From opera to death metal. This is my favorite song of all time. So well crafted. Such a great messege and so many layers of emotions. I take the song a bit different and simpler: The man that goes and works for his family and misses them. The everyday man. Beautifully arranged. Such an unusual song that Jim Webb wrote and the great voice of Glen Campbell. The perfect vibrato guitar solo. The strings. The effects of the whine in the telephone line. Paints such an amazing picture. And it has the all time best line in a love song "And I need more than want you, and I want you for all time" What a melter. Best song ever written. However one wants to interpret the song the sentiment is there and yes one of the most unusual haunting songs ever.

You have a great ear and better memory. I had to look it up, but the first line of this song was used on an episode of the Muppet Show. As for Glen Campbell watch the movie "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me", It details his final tour and his struggles. The way it showed his coping skills (Doctor "What were the three words?" Glen "Someone else is handling that now") and the things his friends did to make his final days enjoyable - knowing that he wouldn't remember any of it but wanting him to enjoy the moment - such letting him win his last game of golf. The movie shows how much those around him loved Glen, even as Glen was fading away. It includes Glen's last song, the Grammy wining ""I'm Not Gonna Miss You", which is a poignant to the movie.

I just like the melody. Never knew why. This song evokes memories of workmen climbing wood poles to work on the lines in the days before boom lift vans. I recall hearing some workmen talk to each other and the older saying he would retire before his knees gave out. They were fixing a power outage on lines along the edge of the summer camp I was working at. Think I still had a year of high school to go (1978 - the song was 10 years old then). Regarding where did the overhead lines go; in cities in central commercial areas a lot of lines have been shifted underground as they are unsightly. This is more expensive. Even with the move to cell phones there are more lines running around not less. There are TV and internet lines everywhere that did not exist in 1968.

I got to admit. I subscribe to a lot of reactors. I like yours the best. Analyzing WHY a song is great is something that only you do. That’s what makes you different. You show an actual love of music that makes you WANT to know. Other reactors, in comparison, come across as shallow. Btw, if you havn’t done either one of them you really should do Hank Williams sr. “I’m So Lonesome I could cry”. (It’s considered by most country fans as the Greatest Country song ever penned and performed. (A pathos example of the human condition.) The other one you should do is “American Pie” by Don Mcclean. It’s a tribute to an Era that is no more. BUT you’ll enjoy it more if you analyze the lyrics FIRST. You are much too young to understand the song without having a familiarity with what the references mean. It truly will BLOW your mind. Lol (btw, it’s an 8 minute song) Do the studio version. Much more “Fuller” than live versions. Good luck to you. Keep em coming.

He sings "It don't look like rain". Shouldn't it be "It doesn't look like rain" ? The composer Jimmy Webb achieved his peak around this time. Short, beautifully distilled song. Before his solo career he used to be a studio musician and part of the ensemble The Wrecking Crew. They played on several hits throughout the 60's, e.g for The Monkees before they became self-dependant. I think you can in a way compare The Wrecking Crew to the band Toto, all though Toto did not play under the name of the group in the sessions but individual musicians. Campbell did have songs on country charts before the best known part o his career. Please react to the song "I'd Like To Get To Know You" by Spanky & Our Gang. It is from the same era with the touch of ethereal as well.
