Easily the most sonically beautiful album I’ve ever heard bar none. The first time I heard it I was a junior in high school and I read that Brian Wilson once said that the best way to experience to it was to turn off all the lights and listen to it in the dark. So that year on 16 May, the anniversary of its release, I did that and it’s been an annual tradition for me ever since.

@@GlennErikMathisen Which is it. You have me curious and intrigued. Granted the harmonies from The Beach Boys are exquisite. @@Alpha_7227 That would be Abbey Road for me personally. I think it is their best album. Songwriting, Performances and arrangements are on fire on that album. It also sounds the best to me audiowise. I do like their psychedelic and more experimental stuff too. (Revolver, Pepper, Mystery tour and White album) But I love harmony. Both vocally and when playing chords. I think that is why pet sounds comes in just ahead for me. I think you make a fair point about the production, engeneering and instrumentation on those albums. I also think The Beatles were the better band with a better discography and a more varied catalogue of songs, but as a single album experience I would rather put on Pet Sounds. Oh Caroline YES! What a BEAUTIFUL video! I wept right through it! You gotta be careful with this album, it's so honest, like you said! And the sounds! Well....that's Brian. He followed this up with the AMAZING single "Good Vibrations". I don't go in for "greatest ever" so much, I definitely have albums I play more than "Pet Sounds", but it definitely is a SPECIAL, unique, one of a kind album and as I'm sure you've read by now the concept was to make the listener feel loved. And watching this video, it shows the album succeeded! I hope Brian himself sees this! I totally understand why all these lyrics hit you hard. "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" is something practically HOLY to me, a sacred piece of music that captures a feeling of love in a bottle. I want to LIVE in that song. The album before this "Summer Days & Summer Nights" was the beginning of this era, and as I said, "Good Vibrations", and then the DAZZLING "Smile" project which Brian shelved rather than compete with "Sgt. Pepper"! That's like......Beethoven! GREAT TO SEE YOU, SISTER!
@janhommer

Don't forget "Today" (or did you mix those two up?), "Summer Days and Summer Nights" was actually a "step back", because the guys at Capitol (I think?) were pressuring Brian into making a more "traditional" "fun in the sun" Beach Boys album. Not that I personally have a problem with that per se, (think they're earlier stuff is underrated as heck, anyay...), but "Today" wasx definitely the precursor for "Pet Sounds" (and is also great imo!)
@TTM9691

@@janhommer I don't think much of "Today". "Summer Days And Summer Nights" has (all in a row) Girl Don't Tell Me, Help Me Rhonda (the GOOD version, not the crappy version on "Today"), California Girls, Let Him Run Wild and You're So Good To Me. I'll take those songs ANY DAY over ANYTHING on "Today". I'll take the INTRO of "California Girls" over ANYTHING on "Today". He gets great production notes for "Today", blah blah blah, ut I don't love the material, it's a nice step in the right direction, but it's not a classic album despite what Beach Boys fanatics (how embarrassing) will tell you. And so, NO, "Summer Days" is NOT a step back, it's a step FORWARD. It's a better album. Period. I know it was a much bigger influence on THE BEATLES, which everyone worships 'round here! lol

Love the format! More of this, please. I'm a Boomer who lived before and after Pet Sounds and I have a professional background in the American pop recording industry. I can tell you that most of the contemporary acts of the day are on record citing Pet Sounds as a pivotal point in pop music. We take the aural space that the recording centers us in for granted as modern music listeners and consumers ...but in its day this was revolutionary. Never before were you taken to a sonic space to experience what today we simply process as a "sample" of a barnyard, a "sample" of bird song, a "sample" of a goat bleating, etc. In those days this involved setting up 80 lbs of recording equipment outdoors and waiting until everything except what you wanted to record to remain quiet for 5 minutes

Good to see you back doing your thoughtful analysis of great records! Pet Sounds is, indeed, something special. Tidbits about Pet Sounds I hope you find interesting: In the chorus for "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" there are four different lyrics being sung simultaneously. They are: "Sometimes I Feel Very Sad", and "Ain't found the right thing I can put my heart and soul into", and "People I know don't wanna be where I'm at", and "Oh, ¿cuándo seré? Un día seré" (When will I be? One Day I Will Be). You Still Believe in Me: Like you, I thought it was a monologue. A few years ago I saw Brian Wilson and his band perform the entire Pet Sounds album. He said that song was actually a dialogue between a girl and a boy who were trying to make up after having had an argument. Finally, with all its layered sonic brilliance, the album was originally edited in Mono because Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear.

Welcome back, glad to have you hear again! As for the album, I really enjoy it, don't know about best ever, but it's a classic. Also Paul McCartney has said in the past his favorite song on the album is God Only Knows. In fact he's said it is one of his favorite songs of all time.

This was a really creative/fun way to do an album review. Loved how you chose to structure and edit this. :) The soundscapes Brian Wilson created on that album always amaze me. The guy definitely had a very unique ear for music.

Oo-er I'm 70 but I've always loved this album, and it's nice to know that people (well at least one people) might still enjoy it today. (Teehee, I wondered what would happen when you got to "Caroline No.") 🙂

The song, Caroline "I Know There's An Answer" was an alternate. The original song was called "Hang On To Your Ego," and Capitol Records rejected it. They thought it wasn't inappropriate. The lead singer of The Pixies Frank Black on one of his solo albums had an incredible version of "Hang On To Your Ego," as it should've been. Paul McCartney's favorite Beach Boys song is no secret --the song is also considered by Paul as the greatest song written in the rock age "God Only Knows." Paul wished he had written it. That's how impressed he was including the vocals of the late Carl Wilson. Your assessment is delightful.

Brian Wilson has been deaf in one ear since the 60s, and he produced the album, so this is one of those albums where the original Mono version is worth checking out, even in the age of modern stereophonics.

I'm glad that the album still has an impact with young people these days. I first heard of Pet Sounds in the 1980's with a Doonsberry comic strip of all things, a character was in the hospital dying of AIDS and his last request was to listen to Pet Sounds. His last words on Earth were "Brian Wilson is God" and that was a mystery to me (all of 14 at the time). I didn't have the opportunity to find out for myself until 5 years later when I was on an ill fated trip with a bunch of college kids crammed into a single room at an East coast beach, I walked that beach right at sunrise and I happened to have Pet Sounds on my walkman. It wasn't planned, and I had heard bits and pieces of the album before, but this time I walked the beach as the sun rose and listened and it impacted me to the point where I was just moved by the whole experience. The lyrics about growing up and coming to terms with that transition from childhood into "oh shit, this is serious now" got me. It's one of those universal pieces of music (taken as a whole) I tell my nieces and nephews to listen to and REALLY listen to when they're that age. It's timeless, even if the world it is talking about died 60 years ago(ish). I'm so glad that you've heard it, you love it, and you kind of know what Brian Wilson was talking about. Plus the freaking Wrecking Crew knocked it out of the park with the music. Without them, the album probably wouldn't have worked. Always around my #1 album of all time.

The smile sessions could legit blow your mind. The first 19 tracks are the actual songs, so those are all you technically need to focus on, and even in their unfinished form they’re just mesmerizing

I love you reviews, they are honest and sensitive, and being a song writer,it’s those oldies that keep inspiring us to keep at it. And your reviews are an inspiration, thank you, hugs ♥️

Aw this reaction was great and the pyramidometer or whatever is a daft/good idea. It took me ages to appreciate the Beach Boys. In fact it was a tribute album called Caroline Now that sparked my interest in them. Anyway great fun watching your reaction. Thanks.

This is one of those albums that at first left me a bit cold, but with time i slowly understood the beauty in the music and production.
