Got the exact same bike except 2 years old in amazing condition. Doing some changes to it currently, had to change the fork seals and put a new back tire on it for safety

That was my first bike when I was 15 in 94. Wish I still had it. I changed the bars out to drag bars and I will say it was a pleasure to own. It has a stupid muffler collector on the bottom that I got rid of and made it a true fuel exhaust sounded great for a 500

$100 ? Got away with murder. Carbs will need TLC for sure. The choke system on those bikes uses fuel passages that plug up at the best of times. Single box CDIs on 85-86 known for failing. My 85 did but i easily wired it for the 83-84 dual box style. Absolutely wonderful bikes ! Had an 84 when I was 17 and now an 83 at 45. They just don't make em like that anymore.

Im looking at buying an 86 shadow 500 but the CDI box is shot. I was wondering if there was and alternative to buying an authentic 1986 shadow 500 CDI box due to there outrageous prices. Pleas let me know if anyone has any ideas.

Make sure it the cdi box most common problem I found is kick stand switch and the common problem I found was the neutral switch neutral switch will prevent the starter from working and kickstand switch will cause no start kills ignition

Hey got an 86 honda shadow vt 500. Issue I'm having is when idling I pull throttle and hold it open. It revs to about 5 to 6000 rpms and fluctuate up and down. I cleaned carbs and checked for vac leaks. Changed gas and fluids. I adjusted the air/fuel mixture and got a little better. Any suggestions?
@2strokeguru

Wide open throttle 6000 rpm you might be hitting the rev limiter

The Honda rebel is a great beginner bike the Honda shadow is definitely a step up it's more powerful and a little heavier I think she would absolutely fall in love with the shadow its a low cut bike so her feet would rest on the ground better styling and more easily to accessorize
