What do you think then guys - marks out of 10? (be kind haha!) This vlog demonstrates what 2.5 hours of practice can do - and I know there's a lot more to be done and learned but I'm pretty chuffed with my progress! 🥳 What next?!

A creative process doesn't need marking in my opinion, and in the case of accordeon playing, the aspect of play matters a lot.. 💖

@@catherinesoubre1804 thank you Catherine! I also agree with you - I think in my haste to find a call to action I fell back into my old ways of needing approval 🙈 it's a process and the journey is the most enjoyable part!

@@MelBiggsMusic it's all very natural, I'm full of wanting approval sometimes and sometimes it doesn't even come to mind.. And I think that sometimes we see "others" as having achieved a certain success, which they have, but then the self judgement, the comparison kicks in and we dig ourselves down needlessly.. Which is why I so appreciate how you present the learning involved, the whole process.. I feel it as a kindness from your part.

I loved the gradual transformation of the sound coming out of this box from something ordinary to something magical. Lovely to watch. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.

Lurrrv your focus and determination! Gill got me the Naragonia tune books for Xmas but I haven’t had the time to focus like I will need to. And I will need to transpose everything too. Maybe a GC is needed! But seriously, it must be one hell of a challenge to get comfy the extra buttons. There is so much one can do with 8. Even seeing people on a 12 bass shows there are so many more patterns and combinations and runs available. With the 18 buttons I think the possibilities simply explode and allow much more subtlety and expression. It’s a lovely tune too! Certainly your lovely expression, pulsing and rhythms shine through. I think you should be an advert for Castagnari to show what can be achieved in a short time with this leap from 8 to i8. I can’t wait for you to start composing your own tunes using the full bass. But I guess there is still some way to go to get really au fait with it all. I await the next episode with anticipations.

Aw Thank you Ant (and Gill!) Just get stuck in - it'll only happen if you make a start 😁 Like I say at one point here in this vlog - I let the intimidation get to me a bit but blasted through it this week to produce the rendition at the end - so proud of myself and the effort I put in but that's the formula isn't it? time in = results out 😁

Oh that's what it's all about in my book!!! So many people who play it in sessions here stop too abruptly (and 'Englishly'!) - it grinds my gears! The first time I danced to them playing this live I cried big tears!! Such a gorgeous melody

Oh my gosh Mel, it is sooo refreshing that we are able to see you in the learning process, that your fingers have to find their place on the right notes and the amount of stretching involved is just as intensive as for anyone else. I mean, Toon’s hands maybe a little larger and longer? Just unreal how he makes it look so easy!! I love Les deux freres but I think I will stick to the 12 bases and make do with the notes I have.. ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you Catherine! So kind - and yes I think it's so important that us pros show that we too still have challenges and learn stuff! And I think Toon has a fair few more years on 18 bass than my measly 1 month 😂 happy to say it doesn't feel as foreign to me at the end of the month as it did at the beginning - but had to rest my left wrist in between as it's had a wake up call!! By the way, if you have a 12 bass GC box with Bb/Eb basses you'd totally be able to do this as it doesn't require the 3rd row of basses! 🤗

@@MelBiggsMusic I do have a 12 bass, 3 rows GC box, I have no idea what notes I play though 😕 also I have not been playing it much in the last twelve months or so as it’s pretty heavy for me , I am not as strong as I used to be, so I have gone back to playing my two and a half row one.

That’s really coming on nicely, and the tone of that box is lovely. I reckon it’ll only be a couple more weeks and this’ll be properly under your fingers. Hope to hear you performing it in concert soon.

Thanks Chris! I think I'm a little while off performance with it (although there is something exciting on the horizon!) but I agree it's certainly feeling more familiar to me only a month in! I wasn't expecting that so am really happy 😁

A weird bit of practice technique is actually to...stop practicing for a bit. It's not something you should do as a general rule but after you've done a long hard session take a couple of days off from the thing you're practicing (play something else if you need to) and let the work you've done settle.

Yes absolutely agree with this!! You'll see from the time stamps that I had quite a hole in the middle of the month 😬 and also I only ever did maximum of 1hr at a time - but mostly shorter stints of 20 minutes. My ADHD brain was getting too distracted! But this approach definitely makes a huge difference and is so much easier to fit in around a busier schedule!

It's actually not anything like what I was expecting (which was back ache central!) In prep for owning this box I've been doing a particular type of exercise - Bodhi suspension ropes - which has massively improved my upper body strength. And the weight actually helps the nuanced pauses in this tune really well. Bruno LT's Valhermeil had been mentioned!! It's on the list 😁
