In this clip you will see the visit of the first ever NATO Secretary General in Moscow.
Manfred Woerner was the first NATO official to set foot in Moscow and meet with Foreign Minister Shevernadze and President Gorbatchev. He came with a message of cooperation and an invitation for partnership with the Soviet Union. NATO Heads of State and Government had just met a few days earlier, 5-6 July, and published the London Declaration in which NATO extended a “hand of friendship” to its former adversaries.
Highly symbolic, this visit to Moscow took place after the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 1989) and before the dissolution of the USSR (December 1991).
