To slow down the water flow before the spillway, research check dams and gabions. You've got the rocks to build them !! :)

I will check it out, thanks I did investigate and plan to make a few more additions to this project based on the knowledge I gained. Great suggestion!

We have looked at several properties there in AR and MO. We have seen so many with ponds and creeks. It is one thing we really want on our property for sustainability. The idea of a stocked pond sounds great as well, but we are careful to watch for fish we are supposed to eat. You must have had a lot of rain to nearly destroy the spillway.

Water is important but I would be surprised in our area if the creeks are year round creeks. Many are 'wet weather' creeks and offer little for the homesteader. Most pond in our area are good but in the really dry of summer some will be tested and may dry up. We did get a lot of rain, 4 inches in 2 days then on the 3rd day we have 7 inches. This particular pond has numerous wet weather creek that feed it which allowed it to give way. I wish the previous owners would have kept the dam and spillway free of trees but that is not the case, so we will deal with it. Either way we feel blessed to have water on the new place!

@@ShalomAcres What is your flood zone? When looking, we always check at Realtor.com for the flood zone number. Many properties have those wet weather creeks and some have year round creeks. That was a lot of rain!

Almost all of the property is in zone 1 but we do have a full time creek which is a 10. Sometimes you need to be happy with the property Yahweh has blessed you with, I need help in this area!!

@@ShalomAcres Agree! We have a house on the list that is in a Fema flood zone, but the water on the flood map doesn't reach the house or outbuildings. So it is all in knowing where those places are and not "building your house on the sandy land". We remind ourselves often that there is no PERFECT place, but there are places that will accommodate the needs we have.
