"They probably came up with this on the spot" *NO.* Dear God, no. The band was pretty much locked up in Beefheart's house for 9th months endlessly rehearsing every part, over and over again. But, they recorded the piece in studio in three hours.

This account of the band's grueling "rehearsals" doesn't mean that the finished album is any more worthy of acclaim. I think Don Van Vliet, the Capt, was intent upon making his kind of masterpiece but ended up with a discordant, rambling, tuneless mess. I'll take his best work on other albums any day. The very title "Trout Mask Replica" is as laughably meaningless as the lyrics of the album's "songs". And keeping your band restrained in a place with little compensation, apparently starving and under the domineering commands of Beefheart is no recipe for brilliant music.

@@charleslangrishl9124 Says what? They are great players who did some excellent work during their time with the captain. But this album is NOT a great achievement as some would claim. It's a sonic mess filled with inane, drug-addled lyrics and some instrumental work that is so much better than the songs themselves.

Trout Mask Replica is simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever produced. A true magnum opus fit to be ranked alongside Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Faure's Requiem, Coltrane's A Love Supreme, Miles Davis's Bitches Brew...I could go on. It's raw, unshackled and bone shakingly brilliant!

You're right, Luke. It's on that list. The very fact that he's so uncomfortable and unable to make any sense of it tells you that Trout Mask Replica still challenges listeners 50+ years after it was released. It just takes a while to understand the logic of it. It took a few plays for me.

This album is incredible. Honestly. I used to think it was unlistenable, in like high school. But fast forward to a few months after graduating college, I love this thing. A lot of his music is more accessible than stuff on here. But this stuff is as well. Lots off polyrhythmic and atonal stuff going on here. I've already loved avant garde jazz, so it's definitely easier for me to get into, as this is definitely has influences from that, as well as blues. Incredible, but definitely something you have to find your way too, it's definitely on the deep end of music haha. Maybe listen to Miles Davis - In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew. Then Orenette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come. Then look up Peter Evans trumpet playing. And maybe "Old and New Dreams" or "Still Dreaming". Then John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme" and "Ascension" and "One Up One Down". If u actually get into some of all that, this might hit better. Not that it's a prerequisite, and I'm not tryna come off pretentious. It's just like... idk, music is a language, and they are using a more complex vocabulary that isn't often used, hence it typically does not get popular. And the music I posted could get one understanding SOME of the vocab.

This album should be taken seriously... And yes, they KNOW how to play- Don van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) was a master of getting the most talented musisicans- at one point he had young Ry Cooder play for him (on the first album). This album was a huge influence on later alternative/punk/new wave artists. For example, the angular guitar playing can be heard in XTC, Television, and even Sonic Youth. I recommend Captain Beefheart: A Biography by Mike Barnes for a great analysis of his music.

If you're in the discussion of albums that sound ahead of their time, it needs to be mentioned by this point. The album has basically become one of the big cannon albums on the internet, up there with Areoplane and stuff. Highly recomend, one of those albums that totally shifts your perspective on music and makes you love it even more.

I'm recommendin' a listen to their next album, Lick My Decals Off, Baby. I met the Captain once 'n told him I thought Lick My Decals Off, Baby was his best work. He emphatically agreed! I also heard him confirm that opinion durin' a radio interview several years later. As a band the musicians really achieved the seemingly impossible.

I obtained this in a blindsided trade with a friend for Alice Coopers Schools Out.... Thinking I had won big (because it's a double album), and knowing there was some association with Frank Zappa, I went home, put it on and was shocked at what I heard. I played it many times, because I had committed to it and one didn't cast aside something so significant. Eventually Trout Mask and I came to an understanding and became one. I still know most of the words.

I first encountered this album in a record store that had it playing loud in the store, 30+ years ago. I purchased it on the spot. I love it but understand why it is hated. From my understanding this was composed by Beefheart on a piano..... he does not know how to play the piano. The band then figured what it meant and this is the result. Months and month to get to this. There is such beauty in this but you have to let it flow over you instead of trying to hold the threat of the beat :) Fun fact, China Pig, the first song you said you really liked has been covered by White Stripes.
