jc1424 He's more of a projection of the environment around him, and the insecurity and chaos that comes with that. Brad may do well to be aware of further context to the album. It involves the protagonist "leaving home" at the end of Jesus of suburbia, going "on holiday" during the song holiday, "walking alone" to his destination in boulevard of broken dreams and arriving at the "city of lights" in are we the waiting. St jimmy is cool cos he could be anything. a new friend, an alter ego, a split personality or even some kind of Tyler Durdon type thing if you get my meaning. i hope brad sees this. He may find it interesting or something idk. And maybe might think more of this album by the end. Not gonna lie i really want brad to love this album. I know ya didn’t ask for this, but American Idiot is a fucking great album, I would say it is better than the black parade.However, the black parade is better than 21st century. Yeah, 21st century has some good songs (Restless Heart Syndrome, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, !Viva la Gloria!) but it did have meh songs (know your enemy, Static Age.) in my opinion, American Idiot > Black Parade> 21st century > Revenge. The reason I don’t like revenge as much as 21st century has to do with my sisters when I was younger calling me an emo fuck for listening to it, they told me it was utter trash, and though I like to say other people’s opinions don’t alter my taste in music, every time I listen to it it just reminds me of that. So my reason for not liking revenge as an album that much is unjustified, I know, but that’s the way I see it. (Also Insomniac beats all of these albums, but we aren’t talking about that)
@mac5895

Iris Henry I agree American Idiot is a fanfreakingtastic album and one of my favorites, but nothing can beat The Black Parade for me. Just the raw energy, the emotion, the instrumentals, the story, it just connects with me in a way no other album ever has, it’s the reason I love music as much as I do today, I owe a lot to this album. On top of that it’s just a great album, one of the best, that in my opinion is better then American Idiot.
@iris5403
6 жыл бұрын
Mac Is a fangirl Yeah, Black Parade had me hooked the same way. The emotional power in his voice (House of Wolves anybody?), the sick guitar riffs (I am looking at you, Famous Last Words) everything just comes together so perfectly. American Idiot is the same way to me as The Black Parade is to you, it's the reason I love music, it is so emotional, it just strikes a note that not a lot of albums manage to. And I had the privilege of seeing Green Day live, where it was just awe-worthy. It was exciting, it was pouring rain and nobody cared, they invited people on stage, they played music like there wasn't going to be a tomorrow, we had the time of our lives (Pun intended), it just made American Idiot a thousand times better, everytime I listen to the album I remember that experience. I think that was what really did it for me, though, otherwise they may have been tied. The Black Parade is still a brilliant masterpiece with a heart-wrenching plot that will never cease to please.

While, yes, I know it’s a concept album, and some songs had to be there for the story. I do agree with you on Are We the Waiting. Sonically, it doesn’t really fit, and it’s my least favorite of American Idiot (my favorite being Letterbomb). I don’t agree with you on St. Jimmy, on the other hand. I felt the buildup was good, albeit tedious, but once you get there it’s a ride from start to end. All the others I shared the same opinion, sans Jesus of Suburbia, which I loved.

Loved the video but you're focusing waaay too much on the whole bush era thing that you didn't even notice that there's an actual story going on and that this is a concept album. A song like St Jimmy that you wrote off as out of place is super important to the story.

Chances are you won’t see this, but American Idiot is a concept album. Jesus of Suburbia was a character, his alter ego is Saint Jimmy and if you listen to the whole thing, Whatsername, (the extraordinary girl) is his girlfriend (and then ex girlfriend) this is basically the story of the Main character (Johnny or as he is known, the Jesus of Suburbia) as he basically causes his life to fall apart. He leaves his home, he gets into drugs/alcohol. When he is on these substances he is known as St Jimmy, who basically doesn’t give a fuck about anything ( and is the main reason of why the Jesus’s life falls apart) He meets a girl, and that’s as far as you are in the album. (Yeah, I also think that Are We the Waiting is our of place, I also think She’s A Rebel is a bit monotonous)

(Maybe review Insomniac? It is a LOT angrier and less edgy, though you may not want to do it because it is not an extremely popular Green Day album)

This was my first concert. Billie Joe midway through went on a rant about George W Bush and flipped him off. It was basically my political awakening as a young kid. My Chemical Romance were the openers with their Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge tour. It was 2004 or 2005.

Hey brad. I really think you should react to a band called pierce the veil. Artv has given them a good review, but i would like to see your opinion on them, honestly you probably wont even see this comment but if you do plz coniser it. I would recommend collide with the sky album (my favorite) or misadventures (2 favorite)

american idiot is so much more about the concept and story behind it more so than the music itself. but as much as i love green day, they are a lil basic as far as music complexity goes. i'm super late to the party and i just stumbled upon your videos on a sunday at 4am, but you make so many points i have never given much thought. and as a green day fan since i was 12 years old i appreciate your thoughts and insights on one of my favorite bands.

The chime section in jesus of suburbia is actually my favorite one. I think it showcases the moment when saint jimmy is thinking about his deeds and misdeeds just before leaving his home and his old life.

Keep in mind that this is a concept album. It has characters (Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, Whatsername) and it is trying to tell a story about them (pretty loosely, in my opinion).
