Rosetta Stoned in all of its goofiness is really awesome, but it did take a while for it to grow on me. “Me the chosen one, and I didn’t even graduate from f-kin high school”. *heavy chugging riffs*

Fellow TOOL fans hyping up Rosetta Stoned only for it to blow up in their face as Brad reacted to it was hilarious. Rosetta Stone is probably the hardest TOOL song to click with in their whole discography. Funnily enough, the song didn't fully click with me until I saw Brad react to it.

I'm skipping Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days. I don't listen to those songs anymore. Not like I used to. Ever since my mom died of cancer in 2021, I held those songs closely to me to get through it all. Just seeing my mom deteriorate and die was a lot. I even had a band come in while I was there and they asked me what I'd want them to play along to. I played them Wings and they somehow made it better. I will never share the video. Just for me and my brother to remember my mom. She was blown away by their improvisation with the song playing in the background. It gave me chills and I couldn't help but tear up. I haven't watched the video since then. I watched it for a month or so after she passed.

Tool is quite different from other of the contemporary prog metal acts due to its theme work aren't as direct or cohesive as Dream Theater or even Opeth did. DT fought for the ideal of making complex notes in a single song, Tool opened up spaces into their psychedelic work to make the music seems more open and less catatrophic but a bit angrier and just harsher. 10,000 Days is their Kid A cuz of its atmospheric texture

Brad, if you ever see this. The portion of rosetta stones whwre maynard is saying the im the chosen one, ET feeding me oranges part, he is referencing a call that took place in the 90s on the radio show coast to coast AM hosted by art bell in which a guy claims to be an area 51 employee or something and ends up spooking art bell when the call gets interrupted by essential art bells access to broadcasting radio audio is disrupted. Also the flying banana whatever in the skies of area 51 thing is a reference to another caller, perhaps the same one idk

You are kinda not doing Rosetta Stoned OG because it’s lyrically so surprising and no one could read the lyrics back then (because they weren’t printed and you couldn’t download Tool until so long after all the streaming things existed … and now they press their most desired albums to vinyl 🙄). But yeah, I’m a lyrics first music listener (who grew up in the cd era) and I always find it interesting when people stare at the whole thing when they listen. Or not good when they do that.

Honestly I regarded 10,000 Days as their magnum opus for a long time, but the thing you said about pacing and song placement is exactly what's really been bugging me about this album since the day I first heard it. Something is really wrong with it to me nowadays. The Wings for Marie duology should've been the intro/outro of the album, but the way it is, it really throws you around with every song. Which is something TOOL only did for this album.
