Chris, there is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed over here! This is precisely the purpose of a TEST run; to get a feel for the machine and work out any obvious kinks. In fact, I'd say this test run was a great success, as you were able to walk away with several changes in mind already. actually you can calculate the theoretical top speed if you work out the gear box ratios, sprocket ratios and measure the circumference of the rear wheel.

street bike motors have very close sized gears to keep the bike in its power band area when you shift the more you gear it down like he has done the closer the shifts become my buggy does 100 in first but will only gain about 20kms each shift at redline was like 40ish kmh each shift when in the street bike stock

You have to think of this pivits and arms as "gears-- except instead of counting teeth, you are just counting inches away form the center pivot. Its simply too short of an arm.. It will be easy to fix if he just reads this and sees exactly why its wrong... He'll get it.

It looked to me like you didn't have enough clutch throw. When you were stopped and put it into 2nd it lurched a bit. So it looks to me like the clutch is dragging a bit. Fantastic build and the suspension looks awesome.

Exactly. Also considering the clutch problems from the last video, this may be exactly what is causing the shift problems. My bikes with hydraulic clutch used to suffer from problematic shifting from time to time. Never had that problem with a cable operated clutch. Those just break and then you're stuck :P

To shift without clutch you have to rev match the engine to take the load off the gears, and hes not able to do that(its alot easier on a bike). Its always accell or decel on this buggy and u cant shift out of a gear like that. I think its his clutch. U dont need much leverage at all to change gears

Couple strips of expanded mesh on the trailer will fix the loading problem and I would highly recommend some skid plates under those drive sprockets. Great build.

Ditto, with bike gearbox you can quickshift it with no clutch. Smaller rear sprockets deffn. Hope chain idler is at the bottom before the sprockets. Great suspention, did you notice how smooth it is? It will make a awesome desert buggy with correct ratios 😉

Motorcycle gearboxes dont like changing gears when sitting still, that's just how they are. But if you're having issues when its moving along then theres probably something wrong with the shift forks and if its popping out of gears when going along then theres probably something wrong with the dogs in the gearbox or theres might be something wrong with the gear shifter mechanism that you made

It's actually pretty easy to do, you just need to count how many revolutions the input shaft needs to turn before the output shaft completes one revolution. Repeat for every gear and it'll give you the ratio for each gear. The bikes output ratio is pretty easy to find, and from there, some basic calculation will give you the right gears you need if you want to go at a certain speed. It might sound complicated on paper, but look how much time you waste trying to figuring out the right gearing just by ''winging it'', on top of buying sprockets that you don't need. And after all that, he still has now clue what sprockets he needs to buy, and looking at how he designed his trailing arms, he might need to modified them if the sprocket's size needs to change a lot.

Clutchless shifting hurts the dogs in the gearbox. Don't do it. It might feel smoother to you, but the gearbox gets a massive shock load when you do it.

Around 8:20 you can see that the headers are separate. At first I thought he took two 2 cylinder 500cc engines but then I looked closer the headers each pair has it own exhaust. So you're not getting the full 4 cylinder sound. You're getting the sound of 2, 2 cylinders.

it's a sequential bike gearbox, you only use the clutch in 1st gear to get moving. only need to lift off the throttle briefly when you shift.

Not much coasting going on.... The rear gearing needs to be 1 to 1. Change your gearing at the motor and jack shaft, like a bike would do. The rear is just transferring that ratio.

That test went well, suspension looks sweet. Spin that secondary gear box at half the speed will lower the noise, your gear change will do this. Then it's just a matter of how much torque it can handle. (You know this already, I just had to say it). Nice work!

I've been stoked for this build from the start. I haven't seen anyone do that rear suspension setup and I love it. Plus I have a sweet spot for street bike motors. for the gearing, just replace the sprocket on the input of the 3 speed trans with a front sprocket, like a 17-tooth. For the shifter, put a second cable on the other side. That way you're not pushing through a cable, you're pulling with it in either direction you move the shifter. That's just my two cents. Love the build though!

I figured it out. Steering wheel is off by about 8 degrees. That would accommodate for about 32% static drive train loss which compromises final gear ratio. Joking aside... Great build. Can't wait to see it fully dialed in, things gonna be scary fun

I think the gearing might be a little short however all the power in that engine comes between 7-10k rpm. looks sleek though and once it is going youve got loads of power to play with. whacking 44teeth on the rear might give you all the speed you want.

It doesn't seem like it's actually shifting gears. The engine didn't drop in RPM when you let the clutch out. And the gear change is super easy. Change the sprockets on the drive axles. Smaller sprockets would result in more clearance too. It needs guards around those sprockets to protect the chain and sprockets. Awesome build!

I would definitely recommend adding a whole firewall behind you. Especially after watching what happened at Cleetus and Cars Burnout Contest. Chain guards are cool, but the radiator getting hit and blowing up on your back is gonna hurt too. Just some food for thought

The motorcycle you pulled that engine off of probably did 60 miles an hour in first gear I have no idea what the gearing in the Spider Box transmission you put in there is but you got to think you probably reduced it 10 to 1 so you're only going to be getting out about 6 7 miles an hour out of first gear and I expect there really close range gears to begin with

Nope--- they will do 95 in 1st gear at redline--- I've tested it... He should get this thing at least down to 4 to1.. I'd go even lower, becaseu he can alwasy drop that 3spd down into first if he want's low gears. He just needs a crash coarse in how to actaully calculate the gearing and make it comparable to other buggies (or the bike, but not SO high. lol)

Its an easy fix though. i was explaining to him that the reason why it wont shift is because at the rear, the little shift arm that his cable is hooked to is far too short and he's losing all of this mechanical advantage/ which is causing a real spike in the torque requirement. He just needs to make those stubby little arms longer and it would shift like a dream (you can see it at 16:00)

When I had the same set up on my kart back in the 90s I used 20 tooth on the drive wheels and it gave me so much more clearance just don't make it where you go into hyperdrive, also a great little idea for steering is use an electric power steering unit off of a cobalt just make sure you get the body control unit inside the vehicle it will stop any bump steer and then you can add a steering gear setup to cutdown the turns to go from stop to stop, you will love the change!! Good try out but as I learned on my builds is figure your gear ratio in advance so you don't have to waste money!

I had quite a similar problem with a gear box I didn't know the ratio of on a 4 cylinder quad. But now with a similar middle axle to yours I'm just running a standard front sprocket at the motor and 2 identical on the middle axle and then just a like 40 teeth sprocket at the "output" axle, works great.

It seems to be geared perfect, you just barely revved it at all. If i recall the engine has a redline right around 10000 rpm. In the video it sounded like you were only around 3k to 4k rpm

I know everyone, but lets say he never broke 4000 rpm in 6th. He still has another 6000 rpm to go. Im just saying id do the chain guards first, then open it up and see what it does. Its a dirt machine, it shouldnt be geared exactly like a streetbike.

@@colerippeon3903 He said he didn't get past 8k rpm. Even if it's only 6k rpm in the video, he never went over 30mph. That translates to 50 mph at 10k. Do you really want a 1000cc buggy that needs to readline in 6th to go 50 mph? His ratio is at least 3 times to slow.

smaller sprockets on the wheels, will give you more ground clearance too. Putting a larger front sprocket on will be a pain with the seat clearance. I'd halve the number of teeth on the rear.

I agree this was a success. Safety is not quite there. The radiator right behind your head bothers me. This should be more behind you and with guards so it there is a leak it can spring out under pressure spraying at you while strapped in with boiling hot fluid. Put a coolant catch can on it so it works as intended. Coolant system is supposed to put out some fluid and as it cools down it sucks it back in. Gearing needs to be simplified. If you go 1 to 1 on the secondary gear set you will be fine.

Two steps forward, one step backwards. The back-steps are easier with actual reverse. Nice build--it's coming together really well. And yeah, smaller gears out at the end of the rear wheels would be a good idea. Brilliant build! Fully enclosed chain guards for those to keep dirt & debris out, not a bad idea either. Two pieces? A flat plate with a hole for the wheel shaft, then a clip-on one with the sides for the opposite-- with the top-end (front) C-notched to fit over that jack shaft. The flat one stays on, the more complex one removes in the field, for quick chain repairs on the trail. :)

You get the real power after 8k on this engine. Under 4k the cbr1000rr is underpowered..

Just a tip i geared my custom buggy for 200 kmh will do around 100kmh in first gear at redline and each shit will only gain you about 20 kmh The shift points in street bike motors are very close so keep that in mind when you redo the gears in yours Im running a yamaha R1 1000cc motor in my buggy and is about 1100 pounds

I would get rid of the reverse transmission and add a starter motor reverse setup on the chain drive.

Great build! You should add a small expansion tank to you rad. The bike engine is designed to have one. It will end up over pressurising the rad/engine if you dont use one. Keep up the good work!

It didn't sound like it ever changed gears, and what about the 3 gears in the trans-did you ever try another? You are such a great fabricator, but you seem to have no idea what your engine or trans is doing while you stumble along.

I put a VTX 1800 in my mini crawler. Complete with a shortened dana 44a from a wj , custom drive shaft to tie the 2 together. Best 500 bucks I've ever spent .

Dude just scrap that whole back end and go look at how some actual long travel IRS buggy’s rear ends are built and build that thing right and properly use those Kings for their intended design. Have something reliable that works so you can have fun and won’t stress over whats going to break every time you take it out.

You could go to electric solenoids for the shifter yet to him on there so you just hit the button and that goes one way and hit the other button it goes the other way

You got to a way better spot than most people man,most people never finish stuff you just need some tweaks,sweet cage and suspension work! I’ve always wanted to do a buggy like this with like a 1200 snowmobile engine and CVT,I just don’t have the skills by myself.

Come on that is NOT bad! Some focus on the positives as well.. that suspension looks to working amazingly. The thing looks great, electrical and the engine is working so all-in-all gearing and the shifter look like quite small issues for a 1st test. For anyone who has not made anything like this is nothing short of amazing!

Everything worked pretty well. The is a gearing calculator I used on my newest project that’s easy to use. Also why not just put some me huge wheel on the rear like some 35s that would fix the gearing too

I really think that auxiliary transmission has to go, re-engineer the shifter and let 'er rip. The motor doesn't quite sound right, maybe it's just the dual mufflers causing it but an inline 4 should sound smoother.

That sounds like you're running with dead cylinders...... Those engines wind out !! My neighbor in Phoenix builds sand rails out of Rocket engines all the time.... That thing should be screaming & shredding turf with front wheels off the ground !!!

He never revved it out because of the lack of chain guards and shifting. He said he never went full throttle. That thing starts right up and sounds perfectly fine

Time for a trailer winch. To be expected with a light weight 2wd vehicle. No biggie, keep drive forward, its awesome build with some querks to work out. Thats why I watch, I like to see your solutions. Definitely hook the cooling fan up the thermost control.

Yeah you really need to change the gearing. When you loaded it on the trailer and were all the way backed up, you were spinning the tires and it didn't even effect the motor at an idle. Just a thought: Your geared like a winch so if you keep it as is you can remove the winch from your front and just carry cable to wrap around the axil.

You should dabble with an RX1 snowmobile engine. The belt drive, gear case, CVT trans, and push button reverse function would be perfect. Plus it has a very broad torque curve, will rev to 10,000 rpm, is very compact, and would cut your driveline weight by half. If 135hp isn’t enough, you could add a turbo kit to it. I’ve seen turbo sleds pushing 300hp, although I doubt you’d want to try that with warm, summer air.

Triplex chain tensioner should help with the back lash and noise they use them for sprint cars. Nice thick pice of metal over that chain. If it was easy everyone would do it looking great 👊

Sport bikes are designed to be shifted without using the clutch. It's actually much smoother that way. The only time the clutch should be used is from a stop or coming to a stop. I used to outrun my buddies 900rr on my 600f3 all the time until I told him to quit using the clutch. Makes a huge difference in performance

It looks super cool. Fantastic build, and a good result considering how much you've stepped up on this build - I can only imagine the skills! As someone else said, some chain guards to look after chains/sprockets. And I'd calc the gears out. You know teeth on gear sprocket, intermediate and final, and the ratio of the hi-lo gear selector, and the diameter of wheel/tyre combo and you also know what the engine revs to. Do the maths rather than just change stuff via guesswork!

I'd move that radiator.It's mounted right behind the driver.Not only does this block air flow but if you have a leak ,it will not feel cool.Plus the high rpm at slow speed doesn't help either.

It started, and ran, the wheels didn't fall off, the engine didn't blow, the wiring didn't burn, and the suspension appeared to mover well.. Great starting point from where I sit!!

It was brilliant, of all the things that could have been an issue you only had the gear change, the gearing wasn't a problem it works perfectly just need different ratio.. Great job 👍👍

And us a smaller tubing for the clutch so it will have. A bit more pressure to make the clutch work and gears will be much easyer to fit in... If is not you will end up breaking the garbox

Awesome dude!! Just switch out the rear sprockets for smaller ones!! It will also help with clearances in the rear and fix the gearing issue.

I would just put way larger rear tires on the buggy because that will vastly change the gearing while improving ground clearance, traction and the overall appearance of the unit. It looks like you are running some tiny 24 inch golf cart tire not so it you step that up to like a 32 or 33 inch tire it will look a whole lot better in my opinion and that low range will actually be needed for slow technical stuff and the high range can be for open trails etc...

A little bit technical, but calibrated spring loaded rachet shifter would help count gear shifts. May need a up and down shift lever

Deffintly didn't sound like it was shifting at all. Everytime you got back on the throttle after trying to shift it was exactly at the same sounding rpm with no increase In speed. Good work so far dude!

That thing is amazing. REV IT!!!!. that thing will Rev to like 12000ish, and you were no where close. The bike you took it out of will probably do between 70 and 90mph in first gear. The noise is scaring you. Rev it once until you feel it hit the limiter and you'll realize how not slow it is. I'm jealous.
