Back in the days after the 1970s Leak 3050, British engineers started to make plastic baffle speakers, one being the Arcam Alpha, just like boom box speakers but larger and uh ... when Tag McLaren had made them with Andrew Jones, a huge price tag fee had been affixed for all his trouble. But who bought them? Well they were bought by loads of friends and you know, that was that.

Finally an Andrew Jones design that seems like it was meant for ME! I fell in love with the $30k TAD's, but I'm operating at more of a $3k budget. I hope you two continue the relationship. • the Bruce Katz record is a great recommendation for audio listening/enjoyment • you’ve made a solid point, a “bookshelf” speaker of THIS size looks better on its side when stand mounted. • Showcasing a viewers system of the day/week is a great idea to end your videos. We want attention as well lol. •Lastly, I hope you can go into more serious depth on this speaker and MOFI speakers in general in the future. Only comparing this speaker to a $6,000 speaker feels a little protective of its weaknesses. Let’s see how it compares to. Speakers in the same price range. :)

@@psyborg06 I build my own amplification, kit based, DAC and loudspeakers. From Class A MOSFETS, and now Valve OTLs, kits. Loudspeakers based on push pull planar magnetics to Raal/Lowther/Jordan, transducer based. So, I agree with some of your premise. But the reason I built the way I did, examples, employing 375,000 uf of Capacitance in an unregulated output stage, utilizing double bypassed, smaller value, different dielectric, Caps, on the LARGE, computer grade, surplus, electrolytic, Caps, for the solid-state iterations built, and now recognized as sound Electrical Engineering, because some 40 years ago I read J Peter Moncrieff's assertion the sound would improve. Same with Nelson Pass, publishing in the Audio Amateur that the Lang Topology was the, 'Most advanced and elegant design yet published', and that included His own amp, as Nelson is/was a contributing Editor. The Lang Topology was the amp I chose to build from PC boards, no instructions, and my first foray in amplification. First Class A design too, and man what a difference. Also employed Nelson's later published advice on increasing the Current, in my case doubling it and increasing heat sink surface area, also doubled to increase power, doubled, output. No measurements, just the advice of renown, "Experts". I came to Transcendent Sound's, Valve OTLs by reading a book by Bruce Rosenblitz, who had received a patent for His work and probably read it 4 Times before I took the plunge and laid down my cash. Best investment in Hi Fi I EVER made, too! In '89 I was attempting to make my own ribbon transducers, but the surplus supply of really CHEAP Alnico V magnets fell through. I saw an ad in Speaker Builder, for the RD 57, a push pull, planar magnetic, designed for Boeing's Noise Analysis Lab, and being sold out of Seattle. Was on a plane, flying out of Logan, immediately, to audition them and bought them. Another great deal, as the later iteration is used by Genesis Advanced Technology, its the RD 75, as the midrange in their some, 400,000 dollar, top of the line system. I paid 1085 bucks for the pair. The Audio Note Kit DAC, ad was published in the Audio Amateur back at the cusp of the Millenium. It mentioned NO oversampling/up sampling, R2R, Topology, reproducing what was actually recorded, not a waveform reconstructed by a computer algorithm, guessing. I bought the kit, unheard, another killer product. No measurements, just hunches and then the observation/perception of only myself. Did grow up with a Baby Grand Steinway in the Home and played strings most of my life. So only from my own personal experience now, I do NOT rely on measurements, alone. Sometimes intuition, listening sans measurements, and the advice of, "Experts", like Steve or Michael Fremer to point me in the right direction. Remember the final arbiter in this amazing Hobby is if We, "Like", what We invest in. A totally subjective observation. Forgive my long-winded explanation, but I believe, again subjective, that We as a species are too ignorant of the phenomenon of listening to just go off of, "Objective", measurements which may or may not correlate to what We actually perceive. As We don't actually perceive Reality, We process it.
@psyborg06

@@scottwolf8633 Correct, we process reality which is why we cannot rely on subjective opinions like this video. Every word uttered is processed through his reality. Objective measurements are not subject to any individual's reality, they are simply information - that is the beauty.

Жыл бұрын
@@psyborg06 Back in the 70's the marketing departments of mostly solid-state amplification pushed the notion that THD numerical values with smaller and smaller measured values were better sounding hardware. It became absurd. With values routinely measured out to .001% THD and less. Did they sound better than hardware that had measured values of .5% THD? Nope. Why not? What they employed, was large amounts of negative feedback to achieve a measured numerical value smaller than the competition. The manufacturers used analyzer readout instead of their ears. And many, many, amps sounded worse, even though the numerical values would indicate the opposite. So, when you state, "Measurements are not subject to any individual's reality,..." I disagree completely. For if not for Human perception how do we correlate numerical values with what sounds good? I'd wager that today's manufacturers have listening sessions to compare Topological alterations for sound quality, against their baseline product. Do you know of any manufacturers who just measure their electronics and then ship them? Why not, if measurements are the unbiased arbiter? When I built my version of the Lang Amp, before biasing it, I turned it on and played a CD through it, just to make sure it wouldn't catch fire, or had an objectional hum. It sounded OK, but no big deal for quality. So, inserting my Multimeter, set to Ammeter with each channel's positive supply rail of the output stage, I slowly adjusted the bias Current from 0 Amps, while the CD was playing through the transition Current, 2 Amps, where operation became Class A, to my designed bias Current of 4 Amps. While passing slowly through to 2 Amps, A Class operation, the sound came into much greater holographic focus, highs became sweeter and the sound, more palpable. All this in mono, as I had to bias each channels power supply separately. The Amp had 4 PS toroid's, one for the input and driver stage/channel and one for the output stage/channel. Was there a change in the %THD? Nope. So what happened? Increasing the bias Current forced the output transistors to remain, ON, always conducting. Is there a measurement for denoting the pico to nano second Time lag between turning OFF and then turning ON the output transistors in each cycle? If not, why not? The alteration in sound quality was dramatic and those listening with me could perceive the alteration. How would We measure the change? The amp did get a hell of a lot hotter, too. When We realized the reason that these high negative feedback designs sounded worse, even though the measured values indicated that shouldn't be, a name was invented for the phenomenon, TIM, Transient Intermodulation Distortion. That too, then became a marketing gimmick. But We learned that strictly going by measurement was folly, even though there shouldn't be any perceptual bias. But that is not how We operate. What We measured didn't in this case, correlate to better sound. If you read my original post, what I stated was I enjoyed Steve's erudite wordsmith qualities and I lived vicariously through them. A totally subjective experience for sure. But so is listening to the Notes. We use measurements to help guide Us. But sometimes they betray Us. If I played a run on my guitar and hit a wrong note, you'd wince and easily hear it. Would any analyzing instrument designed to measure/detect KNOWN errors, register it? See my drift?

I find it interesting that comments criticizing the cost being too high are coming at intervals between criticisms that they are manufactured in China. What do you think the price would be if they were made in the US? My guess…double, at least. Most US made speakers use foreign made components anyway, including from China.

After viewing Steve's + a few other YT vids and reading up a little on the design without knowing the MSRP, I didn't initially expect a high $3Ks range primarily due to his long history of low $ entry with a new product and/or brand design, for the most part. Hi Steve, great review! I recently got a chance to hear the SourcePoint 10 at Just Audio in Balt. Md. I was super impressed with the vocal and overall musical performance of these speakers. I was wondering if the softer treble response output you have gotten used to with your new reference speakers is possibly making you more sensitive to speakers with normal or average treble output? Thank you for your great reviews, looking forward to more.

Concentric design is great, also the speaker baffle has a shape that would limit defusion

Most promising design I've seen in years, simplistic on the surface, but if well-done may be spectacular. Another speaker where I'd be curious to know how well it pairs with your 2.3 Watt Decware?

Thank you Mr. Gutenberg! I concur with R L. I'm surprised, given what several reviewers have been saying, that this review didn't show that these were any more special than any other speaker reviewed. Something feels off. Perhaps the difference is, as the Audiophile Junkie pointed out, that Andrew Jones provided a carefully-curated scripted demo to show off the best of that speaker in that hotel room. Perhaps the speaker isn't as great as it was marketetd. That's why multiple expert view points are sometimes what's needed... And this wasn't the first "meh" review.

Hey Steve, heard the album Nameless by Dominique Fils-Aimė on my recently purchased stereo system, absolutely loved it. Just one request, it will be really nice if you could list your music suggestions in the description. I loose the track of them by the end of your videos especially when there are multiple records and I keep scrolling back to those parts of the video 😁 Love your channel. Great work. Thanks

In ref to your ref speakers, aren't open baffle (no enclosure) speakers borrowing from Amar Boses' 'Direct Reflecting' designs from 1968, and open screens, like Magnapan. Different approaches to the use of reflected energy to create a huge soundfield . . . interesting. 🤔

$3700 seems rather steep for those. As overpriced as MoFi's digitally sourced records and $399 "noise dissipation" record weight.

Why not compare them to the LS3 Meta’s? That seems like a more logical match…jus’sayin’…other than that, they look incredible, and I’m sure sound it, as well…

This is a very polite negative review imo. Bright treble, in particular, translates to "look elsewhere." Steve, I thank you for an honest review when so many reviewers have switched to shameless promotions.

Careful AJ is going to start sending his gear to the Mrs. I wonder how the Source Point would sound with a tubey amp? Wilsenton or? Apparently the HiFiRose pairing at CAF is not so great. I love dual concentric sound. Wondering if this one got rushed a bit? AJ will fix it soon enough.

Think I just might.. wait for a pair! This would probably be a better bet than the the Zu Audio speakers I have been looking at, which people say, are, revealing, but "too lively!": that's what I don't like about my current Martin Logans. I do think that point sources matter. You can get better near field listening and a less smeared soundstage and imaging if you have a time aligned crossover, and as few drivers as you can.

The industrial design of these is a grand slam... mid century modern blended with the low diffraction facets ... all with the wonderful visual symmetry of a coax. Coax platforms facilitate more nearfield positioning... if needed. Accessibly priced. Refreshing hearing a design approach around motor optimization, linearizing flux variations. Ground up, drive unit designer, all the way to cabinet vent execution mitigating internal resonant excitation. There's competitive products whereby the designer picks off the shelf drivers, spits out the crossover via software, has an offshore buildhouse assemble everything. Perhaps the first loudspeaker run of 1000, is when the designer hears for the design for the first time. There's exceptions, and that may be a stretch... just pointing out how refreshing Andrew Jones' process is. Streamlined and productive. He's so prolific ... He's done the über high budget TAD designs, KEF, brings his design chops down to the masses with Pioneer, his big run at ELAC ... Impressive This mofi coax seems equally impressive.

Only 42hz? Seems like people are easily satisfied these days. For the size and format, one can get a vintage Acoustic Research bookshelves that will greatly outdo this in dynamics, while still keeping the dome tweeter sound, in a true 3 way format. Seems like the hifi industry is just going around in circles chasing the flavor of the week.
