I have much less issue with the Falcons pick than everyone else does.

I just read the explanation of the Penix pick that Falcons GM Terry Fontenot offered up, and his response left a lot to be desired. Fontenot said, "If you believe in a quarterback, you have to take him. And if he sits for four or five years, that's a great problem to have because we're doing so well at that position." His belief was that they fully expect Cousins to work out, which would mean that he'd play all four seasons on his deal making Penix a 29-year-old first-time starter. It's one thing take a flyer on a guy that'll see the field, b/c if he works out, you can be vindicated. To take a flyer on a guy you expect to sit for at least four seasons is bad game-planning. Fontenot might not even be in this job at that point. I think that his rationale is severely lacking, and he's probably not long for the job making decisions like this. And, forget Penix for a moment, but at number eight, they could've taken the first defensive player off the board in the draft. Essentially, they could've gotten the best defensive player in the entire draft at number eight, and they chose this direction instead. It defies logic.

Penix is 23 turning 24, he’d be 28 by the time Kirk’s contract plays out and he’s playing. Not much better, but still.

it depends on Pov, from my perspective it was like, the way i saw the board personally, i myself didn't have a 1st round grade on an edge, i didn't love murphy as a 1st rounder either, i lowkey also gave Quinyon Mitchell and a lot of the highly rated 1st round corners, 2nd round grades, a lot of the corners with 1st round grades for me are going day 2 so in way you can say most players in this draft had a 2nd round grade arguably. But at the end of the day that is just me personally i only say it in their defense because to an extent at a certain point a lot of value on players is subjective and at the end of the day none of these coaches saw value in most other players, they really aren't missing much because ur asking them to take a player that ultimately they don't want when the guys they do, will likely be there day 2 and 3. All that being said i also had a 3rd round grade on Penix and i'm not alone i that viewpoint. regardless i'm still saying. i get why they liked him so much and there is intangible value to taking him that, no matter whether he plays sooner or later. it was a culture pick and it was Raheem Morris' 1st pick of his era and it set a tone for the type of dude they're looking for. even in the moments that Penix doesn't start for them which i believe one way or another will come sooner than people expect, even as a backup, Penix is gonna be a locker room leader and set the tone for the culture everyone needs to represent. it's a inexplicably meta good pick.

@@tvtda1 I think that the bottom-line was that they drafted a guy that they didn't expect to see the field until five seasons from now. If you take Fontenot's comments at face-value, he's assuming that Cousins will work out, which means that he fully expects Penix to sit behind him all those years. So, let's assume that your grades on the draft were completely accurate, there are still dozens of better options for choosing a player that will actually see the field during that time period. I think that the big think being overlooked is that if this works out the way Fontenot believes, why not just draft a QB then, or go sign a FA QB? That's the part of this that makes no sense. He's saying that they'd rather have a guy most people don't believe will excel at the next level sitting on the bench for years before getting a chance to do anything.

Dallas Turner would have been so much better of a pick. Even without Cousins, 8 would be too high for Penix imo.
@tvtda1

@@dsher503 the Atlanta board had it, #1 Jayden Daniels #2 Penix #3. Williams, lets imagine that okay several of the 1st 7 taken were mixed with them. lets say they were high on alt for example but otherwise, lets say okay ur high on Dallas turner, what if a dude they're higher on like the dude i expect them to take tonight, Mo Kamara has a equal or higher grade than turner for Atlanta, he just has less teams interested in him, They also don't mind starting Clark who they already have a corner opposite Terrell. and they're in no rush and the grade they have on Penix is like a billion times higher than anyone else that's left. would you understand? like why they felt they may never have a chance like this again? what if Bijan is an MVP player and elite star in this league? they'd be dying to match him with a QB equally as good and this was the opportunity in their opinion.

Not sure why Bobby hates Penix so much. He IS great. If you don’t like the timing of the pick or whatever, that’s fine, but to continue to talk crap about Penix wasn’t necessary.

You left out the worst part of the Falcons' pick: they could've traded back at least once, added picks, and still got their man. Awful.

Move back where? If penix was there guy, they’d have to be in front of the broncos. Broncos were picking a qb, and penix is probably the one. If they were just going best available qb, definitely trade back, but it looks like they were gunning for penix, for better or worse.

Correct or if they were worried about not being in the top ten they could of added Justin fields , I don’t think Penix is going to be better than fields , I think fields is better than people think but the bears just suck that bad

The Raiders are in a great position after not taking a QB in the 1st round. Minshew is leagues better than Penix, McCarthy and Nix and getting another weapon for a future qb pick is a good roster building method.

9:20 | Justin's point makes no sense... "figuring it out is essentially what the Falcons have done since Matt Ryan was traded. The example of eventually getting to it is waaaaay worse than the decision to sign Kirk and draft Penix. The Falcons have loaded up in the past 3 and now 4 years in offensive talent so that's the "building up the team around" because Pitts (4th overall with Matt), London (8th), Bijan (8th) and now Penix (8th).... the post important position in sports. Goff an awful example because they went from 10+ years of Stafford to Goff... another 1st overall QB. The Falcons had Ryan since '08 and had Mariota, Ridder/Heinicke since. Now, get Kirk who gives you the chance to compete now while having an adequate replacement and/or just backup. The highest the Vikings picked in the Kirk Cousins era was 18th. The other five years, 23rd twice, 30th, 31st and 32nd. So if a team is drafting in these spots AND in this era of the NFL how do you get a passer like Penix? Penix is what 6 months older than Daniels but younger than Bo Nix....Everyone is complaining about the choice based on what Kirk was paid and that's ridiculous to me.. its no different than signing a vet and drafting a replacement.

I honestly think both Kirk Cousins camp and Michael Penix Jr camp should be upset over how this was handled. Cousins camp from their pount of view were mislead about being their franchise quarterback and Penix may end up having three years of his career wasted riding the bench. The optics just don't look good.

As a falcons fan i dont like the Penix pick. I am unhappy about it. I dont mind Penix but not at number 8. I also dont like the idea of taking Penix learning behind Cousins. If that is what the Falcons were thinking they should have drafted someone who plays the game similar to Cousins.

TBH Kirk already started the relationship on the wrong foot when he outright told everyone about tampering when he had absolutely no reason to, and it might cost them future draft picks.
