I relate to soooo much of what you said. The fear people put in you about 1L year is ridiculous 😂 But it is so true that it can be hard to see so many people around you doing so many extra things and resume boosters, etc. and compare yourself. Even in my last semester of 3L year I've felt that way so many times and almost felt shameful for all the things I skipped out on. But it's so healthy to take a step back and be like....it's not THAT serious. Taking opportunities that genuinely excite you is way more productive than piling things on to outcompete your peers. Knowing when to say no is honestly the key to sanity in law school imo. Anyway, congrats on 1K and on finishing your first semester! I'm sure you will have classes (especially starting 2L year) that are way more critically discussed. When I started taking more "justice-based" courses like Prisoner's Rights and Environmental Justice, the discussions were so much better than in 1L courses.

LOL maybe it’s just me who feels that way but compared to the main campus the law school doesn’t live up to the rest 😂 but like I said I’m sure the library will be super nice when it’s done. And I can’t do any clinics until 2L or 3L but definitely plan on doing at least one. The clinical professor was my civ pro professor and he is amazing so maybe it depends on the clinic but I know columbias trying to improve their PI but it definitely doesn’t have the most resources or get the most attention yet. I will say career services does seem to have a big focus on trying to change that though.

Hello! They have a lot of programs that connect with organizations all over the city. Those are mostly for 2L and 3L but I believe there are a handful of projects you can join in 1L if you’re feeling up to it. And they provide guaranteed summer funding and the loan repayment program is probably the best way for people doing public interest to have more financial security

Hey Tyler, I am an NYU year one student for undergrad; undecided major. How long would you suggest me to prepare for the LSAT and how intense is law school compared to undergraduate school?
@tydieofficial
Жыл бұрын
LSAT depends for each person I’d say. Some people seem to click with the test where others might have to practice more. I’d say take an initial practice LSAT just to see what your starting point is and then based on the score you want can help inform your studying. I would focus on getting good grades in undergrad tho tbh because your GPA will also be a big consideration. As far as intense I have enjoyed both in different ways. Law school is a professional program so that definitely changes the vibe some but not in a bad way just more focused on career stuff id say.

Can you speak about navigating law school in a queer relationship? Feeling a little scared as a queer pre law student!!
@tydieofficial
Жыл бұрын
Totally! It honestly hasn’t felt much different than other spaces. I’m out to most professors and don’t feel uncomfortable using personal anecdotes in classes. There are definitely other queer people at my school and my section is very respectful overall of people so it hasn’t been a problem as far as school is concerned. I’m a little more hesitant with jobs but have been trying to find places with LGBT affinity groups and who have diversity initiatives which helps a lot. I’d say being in a large city also helps because there’s always so much going on it doesn’t feel like much attention is on me but I could imagine people have different experiences depending on the size of the school, where it’s located, and those types of things

Hey bro, I'm thinking about doing the non-traditional path myself (out of school for 7 years now). Did you consider doing school part-time while still working? If so, what ultimately made you decide to go full-time?
@tydieofficial

I didn't consider any part-time programs because I figured if I'm in school I would rather just focus on that, though I know everyone's situation is different. As someone who is considering Columbia, do you find it to be less expensive to live in the dorms or in a studio/apartment?
@tydieofficial
Жыл бұрын
I live with my partner off campus and believe we have a good deal for NYC in general regardless if it’s student housing or not. I definitely think overall you can find cheaper housing than the grad housing Columbia provides especially depending on how early you register for housing (if you register late usually the most expensive options are the only ones left), but finding off campus housing definitely takes more effort and it likely won’t be as close to campus. I order getting away from the school and having more space for less money but I also have lived away from home for 5 years so had fully furnished apartments beforehand so didn’t want to have to sell all of that
@nicholastillar8042
Жыл бұрын
@@tydieofficial Did you take out enough loans for your rent in NYC or are you and your partner working to pay for the apartment? I don't know if Columbia allows students to work in their 1L year, but I know here in Texas a lot of schools require you can't.
@tydieofficial
Жыл бұрын
@@nicholastillar8042 I think you are able to work but it would definitely be difficult to balance everything and since you can’t choose your class schedule 1L your job would need to have flexible hours. I have money saved from previous work but am mostly using loans and scholarship to cover the cost. Since my partner is still working at their job they cover more of the rent and I’ll compensate more post law school.
@nicholastillar8042
Жыл бұрын
@@tydieofficial Ok! Thank you. I don't think I would get any scholarship money for Columbia (I'd be shocked if I did), but do you know if I can take out only federal loans or would I need to get private loans as well?

@@nicholastillar8042 you should be able to take out as much as you need through the grad plus loans I believe. But that all depends on if you’re an international student and stuff as well but I think most of us take out extra loans for cost of living with grad plus
