Gillespie field, wow, that brought memories back, I've started flying on GA right there!

Great job Erik for your 1st solo flight. The people criticizing you not calling positions is so wrong at a towered airport. Don't clutter up the frequency at a controlled airport. The controller knows exactly where you are in the pattern!

Hey Erik, as a pilot myself, I'm blown away by the unjustified "criticism" by a couple people below. MY criticism would be to them if they are pilots...did those folks really not hear you and the tower communicating? I think "basic skills", are knowing what a tower sounds like hahaha! ANYWAYS, great job flying the airplane! Your ATC communication was super solid, your flying was excellent, GUMPs checks were great. Nice work!!!

I did not, but want to encourage this guy and others to pull the gear up much sooner. It's not like you have to accelerate to V2 but, the longer you leave the gear down, the less altitude you are going to have if your beautiful reciprocating engine quits - they always do at the worst times. The gear take an excruciating amount of time to cycle in these Cessna's, so give yourself as much advantage as you can for that "black swan event."

It’s two years later! You still have that Cardinal? How’s the flying going now? Not a glass panel, but it sure doesn’t look original. The cabin and panel look great. Funny, I assumed that when you titled this “First Solo...” I assumed you meant your first flight after getting a check out or endorsement. Reading the comments I see you used this as your primary trainer? That made for thorough student pilot training, I’d guess. I got a little 177 time years ago - the one I flew was 1968 straight 177 with the 150hp engine. As commonly reported by others, they were a little underpowered. But if you treated it as a capable two person platform, it was fun to fly - All variants of the Cardinal are noticeably different in handling than a Skyhawk. If I was in the market for single engine Cessna, I might look for a later model stiff-legged 177. They really are cool machines.

I’ve just started my flight training and don’t know much about the different plane models, but this 177 seems sleeker than the 172. Does it have better visibility and is it as easy to fly as a 172?

Hi Luis, it is sleeker and has better visibility above then a 172. Its also a lot faster. It's also a complex aircraft with the retractible gear and constant speed prop. The 177RG is not easier. Definitely more complex. I recommend starting with a 172. I would have done the same if I could turn back time. The 177RG id my personal aircraft that I purchased about a year a go. I am about done with getting my private and it took me a bit longer then I had wanted. Erik

Would you recommend the 177 1968 with the 150 HP to start verses the RG model? My business partner is looking to purchase a 177 then get our pilots licenses and then rent the plane out for a few years since we won't be flying all the time

I have no experience flying a 177. I have flown a 180 HP 172 and a C182. I have read that some feel the 150 HP is a little under powered for the C177, but is manageable as long as one knows what they are dealing with. I personally would opt for a 180 HP cardinal retractable or not. There's a lot of info out there, research the C177. I love the plane and hope to acquire one as well.

Mike, I’d definitely get the fixed gear 177 if you’re going to use it as a training/rental aircraft then once you’re both pilots trade up for an RG or just keep the fixed gear. The very first models did have the 150hp and since it was deemed to be underpowered Cessna went to the 180hp in the fixed gear but the RGs got 200hp. The higher HP to compensate for the extra weight of the retractable gear mechanism. Check out “cardinal flyers online” for a good 177 group.

Erik....you have work to do. I know nothing about you but you are in a high performance aircraft. Your radio work is soft to say the least, most of your position calls to tower are missing..calling base is just not good enough. You should have more call outs in your pattern work just flying the airplane. Whoever taught you to get where you are... shorted you on some very basic skills. I would suggest you take a few more flight lessons with other instructors to round out your skills....not knocking you but ...there should be more basic skills displayed in your video. You need to say a lot more of what it is your doing.

You realise that he is at a towered aerodrome right? Position calls are not required at a controlled aerodrome
@syntactyx
4 жыл бұрын
Honestly not sure if you're trolling, Kevin, or just an idiot. He's at a towered field, position calls are not required. "Not knocking you but..." you should get your shit figured out before you tell other people how to fly. Also, position reports aren't even required at non-towered fields over CTAF. Sure, you're an idiot if you don't call out where you are, but it's not required. It's literally ONLY required that you make position reports if that information is requested by ATC. You should brush up on your "basic skills" dude.

Actually, we frown on too much chatter with ATC, especially if the frequency is busy or a lot of people in the pattern. The tower can see you just fine, so you don't have to call everything. Just make sure you acknowledge all clearances and state intentions for each evolution; ie full stop, option, etc. Speaking of which, that Chinese guy in the pattern was especially irritating, and sometimes one could not hear what he was trying to say. He needs to work on his comm skills, not the pilot flying here.

Probably realize now that the criticism was a bit out of line, Kevin. But I would cut you a little slack if you told me you were a GA pilot in a country other than the US. I have never piloted a plane outside the US, but I gather that “circuit” position reports might be standard in some countries. In the US, when working with a tower, you normally only give your position on initial contact, and further only when instructed to do so.
