The first car engine I built was a high compression ka24de for a 240sx. At that time I didn’t k is anything about building engines and did not gap the rings at all. This came to be a problem after I started to lean on the engine. The ring gap was to small and the ends butted up and caused so much friction that it broke the lands off the pistons. When this happened it started consuming tons of oil and dropped compression. I talked to a couple engine builders that were in the area and they told me what I did wrong when I showed them the pistons and also had some advice. They told me they always gap rings to the loose side of spec because the potential loss in power from a big gap is not discernible but the consequences of to small gap is obviously catastrophic.

What is the purpose of changing the ring gap away from spec?
@StupidFastJohn
2 ай бұрын
@@chriskerr1098 a variety of reasons but the biggest one being thermal expansion of the piston. The high compression engines run hotter and forged aluminum pistons expand very rapidly sometimes too fast. Opening the gap just a little bit more keeps it a little safer and doesnt lose any power. If the ring gap closes up under thermal expansion it will start by glazing the cylinder wall creating excessive heat and then the excess friction can eventually seize it up. Its more common to do this in higher compression or when using forced induction like turbo or nitrous adders 🤙

Lightening = unbalanced
@StupidFastJohn
3 жыл бұрын
False, balancing has nothing to do with the weight as a whole. There are specific holes drilled into the flywheel for balancing. That is also why i drilled the holes exact around the entire perimeter of the backplate. Not to mention their are many manufcaturers that make unbalanced engines that run fine there entire life. Harleys, 4g63 4 cylinders is one that is balanced but racers remove the balance shafts and they run fine without em. Just a few examples 👊

Not a bad idea to relay that you are winging it in your machining processes and that the proper hold down equipment is recommended as well as utilizing dial and test indicators for your setups. Edit: appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. Bottom line, you provide great free content.

I hear yah but im not teaching the machining at all im just providing cinematics of it, but those hold downs are what the machine uses so im not sure what the proper ones would be other then a vice which the flywheel wouldnt fit in the one i got with the mill lol. I do alot of stuff off camera like using the dial indicators, micrometer, dial bore gauge etc etc that you can see in the background that most dont pickup on 👊 i do appreciate the positive feedback though! 🙏✊ thank you Burn!

@@StupidFastJohn hold down clamps are appropriate but they have little triangle support that are used on the back side with matching teeth, they are made of the same material but will hold the clamps up at the correct angle to provide correct clamping advantage.

The machining was sick
@burnheretic3950
3 жыл бұрын
That machining was some back woods hokey shit. Appreciate him trying but as a career machinist this is not good practice. The way he was clamping the fly down was questionable at best. You don't ever want your hold down equipment at a negative angle. A little above parallel to your work piece, roughly a few degrees. I could go through all the processes here but iam sure that as he gets more dialed in it will show through in the videos.
