I have been shooting Canon for 20 years, only two weeks ago i switched to Sony. Too little, too late Canon!

Makes sense. It seems they don't care to invest in their apsc linup themselves, so not much to loose by getting others to do the job of providing some decent lenses.

Makes sense to open the RF mount for APSC first, most new buyers buy APSC first.

I skipped Canon when I was returning from Fuji APS-C due to no third party lenses and went straight to Sony with Tamron & Sigma lenses even though I used to shoot 5D Mark III with lots of L lenses.

Are there any firmware limitations like the burst rate and teleconverter limitations they have on sony?

I fear that the "only APSC" will be a forever restriction (until the RF patents expires). If "only apsc" is the rule, then I'll better go with Fuji APSC, or Sonikon full frame

Once a Canon user, up through D80, I am now a Sony user. One of the major reasons I went to Sony, and have stayed with Sony, is the 3rd party lenses. I use the Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 most on my Sony A7RIV. Canon makes a 24-240 RF lens but it comes no where close to Tamron's 28-200 for image quality. If Tamron makes a 28-200 RF I make switch back for at least APS-C. The news of Tamron 11-22 on Canon RF is great news but I will need the 28-200 to go with.

Those are great news! But, what about the Tamron Aps-C 17-70mm f2.8 VC zoom lens? It should be the greatest news for Canon RF users having this lens, because most of the Canon RF Aps-C bodies don't have IBIS.

I think it's a huge step for Canon. Their APS-C line has good bodies, but almost no lenses. So this is huge, to have the Sigma 1.4 primes and compact 2.8 zooms from Sigma and Tamron. I think that in the future, with user pressure, it might be quite easy for Canon to accept at least some of their lenses, like the cheap Tamron f/2.8 zooms for FF, such as the hugely useful 28-75 G2, 70-180, that would make waves for the Canon users. Other than that, probably Canon will have a Nikon-like approach in the future, into cherry-picking what lenses are allowed from third parties and what not. But even so, the news today is huge in perspective, for the Canon RF users that didn't flee elsewhere! And it holds hopes for FF lenses, in the future.

There may an opportunity for Tamron and Sigma to step up APS-C lenses quality. They can spread development costs on 4 brands and release lenses like 50-150 f2, 75 f1, 300 f4, 400 f4 which have no competition. With Viltrox releasing "pro" models, it can make APS-C really attractive.

Unknown yet, if and to what extent a Canon camera's firmware will sabotage the autofocus performance / dependability, as soon as it detects that the lenses' transmitted Exif data identifies itself as a Sigma/Tamron lens. Reviews will have to show. But who cares anyway. APS-C is not as important today as it was 10 years ago as a DSLR entry stepstone. Now that full frame offerings became and become more lightweight with every year. And in Sony's case also with ever-growing and highly affordable 3rd party activity. For example for an one-lens-only hiker/traveler setup: an - A7C+Tamron 28-200 is even slightly more lightweight than an - A6700+Tamron 18-300, which would be slower (darker), and is said to be inferior optically. The slow APS-C demise is just the very reason, why Canon and Nikon didn't and don't bother to invest seriously in there. OM / MFT: is a dying system for very similar reasons. Sony: doesn't come out with an APS-C "mini A9". Models such as a6100 become cancelled w/o successor. Fuji: is condemned to stick to APS-C only because GFX was/is a market failure (never erected itself from its tiny niche) 🙂

Canon doesn't deserve to have Sigma and Tamron lenses. If I was the CEO of Tamron or Sigma I won't cater Canon. But iam a loser and not a CEO. Since Sigma and Tamron wants to make more money as it's a business, they are making RF mount lenses after all the bashing from Canon.

yes, an updated 18-35 F1.8 would benefit enormously from the short mirrorless flange distance. I suspect though the market is not there any more. It is only like a full frame 28-50mm F2.8. That would get a horrible press because how dares it being not even a 2x zoom. Still the 18-35 F1.8 would have to be more expensive due to small production lots / trickling sales numbers.
