What a flawless first drive! She just needed a little exercise to get going again. I think I hear a loose cylinder head on acceleration, something to look at when I pull the engine.

If your exhaust system checks fine you’re right; probably loose head(s) and you would lose power too. Sometimes the studs strip out from the case, especially when they are 10 mm and don’t have case saver inserts.

@@vayabroder729 Yep... also one of the other symptoms of loose heads is when it warms up it runs well and the noise goes away... also had that! Be pulling the engine soon enough when I start putting the body up on the bus frame. 😁👍🦆💩

My first car was a 69 Squareback, bought it and drove it from San Fransisco to Orange county through constant rain. Leaked everywhere. Later when I took it to a mechanic to look at it, he was stunned to see everything was in working order for its condition. While rust free she was still a beater. The one thing that eventually caught up with me was the chewed up engine mounts, the entire engine was being held by the transmission at that point and any hard road would chew up the Flywheel. Went through two transmissions before a competent mechanic told me the issue. 😵💫 Still drive it regularly, and with new mounts in place it is beyond reliable. Definitely a sleeper car, if you have the patience to put the work in.

Engine does sound great. My FI Type 3 ran horribly until it was warmed up too. The cold start injector was disconnected because it dribbled all the time and the T-stat was no longer closing. Replaced the T-stat and it warmed up quicker but, still ran terribly until it got some heat going. Adjusted the fuel pressure and that woke the engine up. In my case because the fuel pressure was set very low when I first bought it. The fuel pressure was so low, it would stumble on long hill pulls and heavy acceleration. Good luck!

Thanks man! It sounded good once it was warmed up. Wild Bill and I are convinced its a loose cylinder head. Ruby had the same symptoms when cold, once warmed she sounded great and made power once the engine expanded. I'll be pulling the engine soon enough! It'll make the body much lighter!

@DuckmanCycles Could be! My experience with loose head bolts has been my engines would die after about 40 minutes of driving and start again only after cooling down enough to get compression back. You could remove your rocker arms and re- torque the head bolts you can get to, as a test....or just pull the engine and find out 😉 Hope it is something simple!!

My first car was a 73 Square Back. In Wisconsin. I called it the Bondo Bug it had so many rust holes patched with bondo it was Base orange with Brown and grey primer. The Heater Vents were all rusted out so it was a cold bugger to drive in winter. It was great in the snow. My sister got it stuck once and let the mail man pull her out and wrapped strap around front bumper. Ripped it clean off the CAR. It screwed with my Hood release I was driving down road about 55mph and the hood flew open bent it back all the way to top of car. Ended up using Ratchet strap to hold it down after that.

The motor runs pretty well 👍. I like the fuel injection. You mentioned that Ruby's transmission might be different than the fastback. Do they have different ones for type 3s? Besides automatic. Mine is the automatic. Love how it drives. It does affect the performance quite a bit, though. My first car was a 1969 bug. Had the autostick. I really liked that one. It's brake line did the exact thing as the square back. Fun video Lord Duckman. 🦆👍. Noel
