Years ago my company hired a retired army vet to be a plumber helper. He didn’t talk or work well with others. He was assigned to me as a last ditich befor firing him. This song came on the radio whial we where driving to a job in my van. He never heard it befor. When they song. The chorus he lost it. Started crying uncontrollably. I had to pull over. Apparently he lost a friend in Iraq that he made a similar packet with. After that he started to open up. Worked with him for years

Glad you made it back Dan. So many didn’t, and when they did they were dealing with physical and emotional wounds till the end of time. My brother in law and his wife lost a baby that was affected by the agent orange, they believe. The toll is great. I don’t know you, but I send my love and prayers to you as you make your way in this world…🙏🏼

Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot is on the coast of South Carolina just outside of Beaufort. I'll never forget the 14 weeks I spent there for boot camp. It was supposed to be 13 weeks, but, forming took an extra week, nobody was joining the Corps then. So, I took a little longer to get enough bodies to form a series. Man, it was hot and the sand fleas were a real mofo.

I will always remember Bob walking me home from my bus stop when we were in Westfield High. Before he went to war he gave me a penny and asked me to give it back to him when he returned. I'am sure some members of his family found some of those coins over the years. I continued to return that penny for years at his final resting place. I reside in Naples, Florida now but will always feel that he knows that I kept my promise. Above is written by a friend of Bob Miller, a Westfield NJ young man who lost his life in Vietnam. This song is very powerful.

I appreciate that you liatened with an open and feelinh heart. Multiple generation vets in my family. I was a nurse at the VA. While this was written about a group of specific memories - its also so emotionally universal to the experience. I think if you dont get choked up or moved listening to this then you are emotionally unplugged from your empathy center. Thanks for a great, respectful reaction.

Mixed feelings is proper here. He sang truth and sarcasm as well because nothing is 100% and it never will be. Brothers in arms. It is too complicated to explain here and maybe it will always be too complicted. If you lived it, you already know it. If you didn't, you have to imagine something that you wouldn't wish to imagine for anyone that you love or anyone you don't love. IDK how to make you respect or see from your own senses and I realize nobody can. You have to see and smell and taste and and and and and and everything for yourself. IDK what else to say. Some of us wish for more honest goodness from others. The world is what it is :(

I highly recommend you keep going with Billy Joel; “Miami 2017 (aka The Lights Went Out On Broadway) is another one that will hit hard. And “Big Shot” is pure fun; such a DISS song!

Along with Brothers in Arms, this is possibly the most powerful songs in honour of those who served.. To all who do, or have served.... THANK YOU is NEVER enough... I had a friend who DID serve, after leaving the service He once said. "I don't know what's wrong with me. I don't trust people, I can't settle ANYWHERE. WHAT DID I DO WORNG????." This broke my heart and I replied saying this... "You were a kind, gentle, intelligent and thoughtful person as a kid, The Army took you in and broke you down bit by bit, to create a warrior to defend us civvies. They made you part of a brotherhood I'll never understand, where even the comaptriots you HATE you absolutely KNOW will stand back to back with you and fight off oppresssion. You were a completely different person when you were on leave compared to who you were as a kid, but that's what they NEEDED you to be! When you left they just cut you loose, alone into civilian life. So you went from that world where you could trust EVERYONE around you with your life and were dumped into a world where everyone is trying to f**k everyone else over for almost nothing. How can you expect to trust ANYONE in civvie street after that? I can see it! You're around for 3-6 months, then you disappear for 3-6 months, same as your average posting in the military. Let me tell you something.... THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU! NEVER say that to me again! You served with honour, You gave your blood, sweat and tears so we that have the freedoms we have right now. You will ALWAYS have my admiration, respect and friendship till my dying day! Anything you need just ask, even just someone to talk to, you don't need to relive what you went through, just show up and we'll sit quietly or shoot the breeze, I'll be right here." He broke down and wept... This warrior fell apart in front of me and said "How did YOU know?" "Because I watched, because I saw the transitions you went through, most importantly, because I was and always will be your friend, friends, TRUE friends become Family, just like those you served with are, You are the Brother I never had and I couldn't be more PROUD to have known you and counted you as my brother!"

20th SOS MAC-V/ SOG Huey door gunner - I listen to this song for hours sometimes - not often as much now days. I was 20 and never killed anything in my life. Fishing don't count. Then they give you a mini-gun GAU-2/B - butterfly trigger capable of firing 2000 & 4000 rounds per minute. I got paid an extra $4 a day for that job. At least beer was only 10 cents a can. I am not a hero - we celebrated their memory on Memorial Day. I am just a Vietnam survivor. PS: Families waiting back home served as well and it was my wife of 55 years who saved my life when I came home.

Parris Island, South Carolina, is where you go to boot camp if you're from east of the Mississippi River. West of the Mississippi, you'd go to San Diego, California. There is a bit of a friendly rivalry between the two MCRD's (Marine Corp Receiving Depots).
