he single "Proud Mary", backed with "Born on the Bayou", reached No. 2 on the national Billboard chart. A cover version by Ike and Tina Turner, released two years later in 1971, did nearly as well, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning a Grammy Award.

John Fogerty told this story: He was sitting on the front porch waiting for the mailman and received a letter releasing him of military duty after 3 years. He said I did a cartwheel on the front lawn, ran into the house, sat down at the kitchen table and wrote "Proud Mary". I guess he was in a good mood.

Tina Turner made this hers when she covered it and she did a great version and love to watch her on stage with it. But it's Tina Turner and she can make anything sound good. But at the same time you really can't get better than the original sound that CCR puts with this. Enjoy both, but I would have to lean to CCR.

Grew up with these guys. No one, absolutely no one, can sing a CCR song like CCR. John Fogerty in his Creedence voice, can't be topped. John in his 'real' voice sounds different. When asked why he didn't sound the same, he said he left that voice behind, that it belonged to CCR. I had 'Centerfield' Album given to me. At first I didn't recognize him, when it played on the radio. But he still carries little quirks from his CCR days. Cosmos Factory has a song called 'Ramble Tamble' with a pretty instrumental on it you need to hear without cutting in. See if you can catch the subtle changes before he sings again. It's a song you really need to "listen" to.

I grew up in Stockton California. Lodi is about five minutes north of Stockton. CCR are from Oakland California. Oakland is due west about 45 minutes away. CCR spent a lot of time playing (as The Gollywogs) in Lodi and Stockton before they got famous as CCR. Stockton is on the San Joaquin river and the San Joaquin delta. The river boat "Delta Queen" was docked for years in town and could easily be seen from Fremont St. My friends and I used to play on it as by this time it was all but derelict and easily boarded. No one cared. John Fogerty probably knew about The Delta Queen because he would have seen it when he was in that part of town. He may be referring to the Delta Queen when singing "River Boat Queen". The Delta Queen was sold by The City if Stockton sometime in the early 70s. It was said it was bought by New Orleans. Don't know for sure. By the way. Tina Turners version of Proud Mary sucks. CCR fan.

Incredible work by an incredible musician, John Fogerty. I've been down to Central America and believe it or not this song is a huge hit down there, you hear it on the radio, you hear it on TV commercials, and this is many years later after it was created. He has had an influence outside of the United States for sure, truly one of the greatest musicians of all time, John Fogerty, it's no wonder the rest of the band, including his brother Tom, we're very jealous of him, it's just a shame

The thing is, John Fogerty had such a backlog of guitar styles, but all blues-based ... though he'd occasionally switch to country such as with "Lookin' Out My Back Door" which is Buck Owens style. As a boy, he watched Hee-haw on TV. Doug Clifford's style of drumming was fairly straightforward but always provided what was needed, evident with songs such as this one. Another is "Green River" wherein Doug brings in the beat after John's intro guitar and just lets it pound with no riffs or switchouts. But perfect for the growling groove and storyline of that song. The only thing lacking, I think, is I wish John would've done one of his famous extended blues guitar solos.

AND this song sung by CCR reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100 while Tina Turner's version reached No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100. In other words I really really like both versions BUT the CCR version was more popular than Tina's. And yet today the media just seems to ignore that fact and whenever it is sung the media always calls it Tina Turner's song completely ignoring the fact that it is actually CCR's song.
