Doc was a treasure here in western North Carolina. I saw him perform live a half dozen times or so, including at the great Merlefest gathering in April. "Tennessee Stud," "Greenville Trestle High," and "Black Mountain Rag" are favorites of mine in Doc's extensive catalog.

I sure wish I could have met Doc. Would have loved to shake his hand and thank him for his amazing music. He was both innovator and master, a national treasure.

My all time favorite American musician. Plays and sings with so much soul.

Doc is a very overlooked musician, I was first exposed to him on the “will the circle be unbroken” album with the nitty-gritty dirt band.❤ I suggest you check out that album.

Very Cool! I’ve never heard a man sing this song or heard it with a guitar. 👍👍

My friend was an exceptional picker from Australia ,a friend of Tommy Emmanuel, and in the '80s when he was in his twenties he travelled across America with just a backpack and a nylon string guitar...he hitchhiked to Doc's place in Deep Gap ,North Carolina, knocked on the door which was answered by Merle,Doc's son and told him he'd come all the way from Australia to meet Doc,one of his heroes...He was invited in and hung out with Doc and Merle and spent an afternoon playing music with them...they were totally friendly and hospitable to him ... he also went into a music shop in Nashville and asked if he could play a few tunes... the guy behind the counter picked up the phone and the next minute he was handed a piece of paper with Chet Atkins's secretary's number on it and ended up meeting and picking with Chet...I know about and love Doc's music because of him...many years later he unfortunately passed away from MS.. Hey Sarah maybe give Doc's song Deep River Blues a listen!!Love your videos! All the best!!✌

Hi Sarah 😊 If you liked the sound of this style, I would encourage you to try Dave Van Ronk, "Bad Dream Blues", from the Album titled The Blues Project. This is one of the finest acoustic blues recordings I ever heard! Thank you this journey back to my youth. 😇😊🌹

I love Janis but I love this song version sung as a lullaby as it was meant to give the slow, soft rhythm sung on a hot southern day.
