As astonished as I am that you've never heard this song, all I can say is, welcome to Bluegrass, son. This song is an absolute legend, and I never get tired of seeing Paul Schaffer, of all people, knocking it out with Steve Martin and the immortal Earl Scruggs. I embraced my Appalachian ancestry because, I figured, with music this good, it can't be all bad.

What really makes a group of experienced musicians like this shine is understanding that if a single mistaken note is played on an acoustic instrument - It Stands Out Like. Sore Thumb- INSTANTLY. With electric instruments you can cover up a mistake, BUT NEVER ON ACOUSTIC. NEVER.

Earl was THE MAN when it come to banjo pickers. Him and Lester Flatt first recorded it in 1943. It's used in the famous chase scene in the movie , Bonnie and clyde. And if u think it's hard to play that fast, imagine all the time since early 1930's , and now ur 80 years old STILL BUSTIN IT OUT..in our hearts MUCH LOVE ❤ R. An absolute favorite of mine. When I was just a young tyke, my father watched 'Flatt and Scruggs' every Saturday night on the Martha White Show. Loved Earl Scruggs and grew to love Steve Martin as a banjo player. Growing up in Nashville, I've met a few of those on stage and they're just great people. I still see Marty and Harry from time to time.

The Earl Scruggs banjo style made Bluegrass what it is today. One of the best examples of Earl's style being carried forward is J. D. Crowe (who recently passed away). He took the style and added much more to it. So many other great banjo players use this style of playing and add their own spin on it.
