➡️ The more I read about Gang of Four's 1979 release "Entertainment!", I'm quickly learning how much of a landmark record it was for the music world. I've only scratched the surface exploring punk bands from the UK, but I've already picked up on a few stylistic trends that seem to proliferate that scene: innovative production choices, spacey arrangements, and a masterful approach to storytelling with music. Oh, and some of the sexiest bass lines I've ever heard. Bassist Dave Allen weaves around every element of this song with impeccable feel, funky inflections, and irresistible mojo. I discuss how his bass tone and note articulations contrast the rigidity of the guitar parts, his use of chromatic passing tones, how he exaggerates the octave slides so perfectly, and how the song only offers bite-sized samples of the energy it's waiting to unleash at the very end. While the song is fairly simple from a music-theory perspective, the way the band plays with layering and space makes for an addicting listen or three. 😮💨🤌🏼🇬🇧
