FYI: Gorillaz waa created when Damon Alburn, lead singer of Blur (Song 2, Girls and Boys) broke up with his girlfriend and moved in with Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl comics). -- The two of them threw insane parties, which consisted of a "who's who" of British celebrities. -- One night, they both got really stoned and came up with the world's first animated band. Tired of being tied to only his Britpop band: Blur, Damon could create different music with anyone, while Jamie could draw it all together using the 4 main characters. The band's bio is simply wierd: Murdoc the Satanic bassist, sold his soul to the devil for a successful band. But, Murdoc wrecked his car, causing 2D's eyes popped out of his head, so he became the blind singer. [Which is Damon sing]. Russell the drummer, is possessed by a dozen of his dead homies. And Noodle, arrived in a box from Japan at age 10. She only said, "Noodle", so that's what they called her. But, when she plugged in her electric guitar, it sounded like 200 demons screaming. -- And thus, Gorillaz were formed. FYI: The real guy head in the video, is Shaun Ryder, who used 808's in the Manchester band "Happy Mondays." -- Which become one of the most prominent bands in the "Madchester Rave scene," back in the early 90's.

The chorus of this song was originally meant to be "It's there!" but Shaun Ryder (the singing disembodied head in the video) has such a thick Manchester accent that it came out as 'Dare'. So they changed the title and just went with it.

That's not true at all. They were testing Ryder's headphones in the studio and Ryder said "it's coming up, it's coming up, it's there" when the volume was right. They built the whole song around this outtake. Here is Shaun himself saying this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p4Gh4Jiqm4KhjKA

Huge credit to Damon for somehow making Shaun Ryder's horrible half-assed vocals actually work within the song. Yes, I know the appeal of Happy Mondays was the druggy off-tempo vocals, but this sounds like Ryder has gotten so fat and unhealthy that he can barely mouth a line. And he's a genuinely grotesque presence with those lovely Brit teeth, in the video.

One of the best joys in life I've had is when you're at a party or a bar or something, and someone very, lost in substance I'll say, recognizes a song kind of jokingly, but then listening to it realizes that they secretly loved the song and forgot or thought they hated the song and had never listened to it properly. And their face just changes instantly, and then there's a smirk. Almost every time. That's a powerful emotion, music memory, and those memories stick more in adolescent years and early 20s or some other age group I can't remember. Neuroscience and study of the brain is so crazy.

If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the band Happy Mondays, the singer in that band is the guest vocalist on this track, and the giant head in the video. "Step On" and "Kinky Afro" are good starting points for Happy Mondays. Oh, and Damon Albarn's previous band, Blur. Britpop legends.

Every song on the Gorillaz's first album is done in a slightly different style from the last. Damon Albarn felt completely free from all preconceptions about what his sound should be when he created this imaginary group, and it shows in their albums. Try "Demon Days" next.

GOTTA LOVE SHAUN RYDER!!!! (the head) He's a f**kin legend in the UK - He was the lead singer of The Happy Mondays - they exploded onto the 'BritPop' scene in the 90's and TOOK OVER! Mainly because of good toons, Bez (their 'dancer' - another legend!) and the undeniable amount of drugs they consumed! 🤪 If you think Ozzy Osbourne has some hard-core drug stories, you should hear Shaun's - it is a MIRACLE that he survived & is still alive today. Their song 'Step On' coined 2 catch phrases in the UK - "You're twistin my melon man" & "Call the cops"🤣 You should listen to 'Step On' and their classic 'Kinky Afro' - both from their album 'Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches' - YOU'LL LOVE 'EM! (PS, DARE was originally called 'THERE', but Shaun's northern accent, meant his pronunciation was @dare' - so the and changed the title!) REACT TO GORILLAZ - 'STYLO' NEXT - brilliant video! Gorillaz are a trip - their whole concept - even their 1st concerts were animated projections! They're UK based and even we didn't know who the band members were for a while. Most of their stuff is chilled, funk, trip hop, rap/rock, but their videos are always second level and SOOOO creative. The main singer is Damon Albarn from a band called 'Blur' that were big in the 90's as part of the 'BritPop' scene. He was the only permanent member of Gorillaz with other members coming and going and loads of guest artists. Check out them at Glastonbury when Snoop comes out and raps on Clint Eastwood - audience members mind blown!🤯🤣 (traditionally intoxicated on whatever to make 'em 'Feel Good') *DISCLAIMER - I ain't forgiven Snoop for being shitty about Eminem.....NOT cool!😠

So Stephen Fry once told a story about Shaun Ryder - He was staying at a upmarket hotel and that night there was a lot of noise and partying from a room on his floor. The next morning he woke up to find a bottle of the most expensive champagne on the hotels wine list at his door with a note from Shaun saying sorry if he kept anyone awake and Fry looked down the hall and there were 20 odd doors each with a bottle of champagne in front of it which would have totaled thousands of pounds. Ryder was notorious for his alchohol and drug consumption and for his problematic behaviour but at times he could be a really nice guy. If people haven't seen it check out possibly the best rock bio-pic of all time "24 Hour Party People" it's weird and funny and full of interesting stuff about the Manchester music scene.

Love Gorillaz and this is my favorite song from them. Originally the song was supposed to be called "It's There", but Shaun Ryder (the singer who plays the giant head) kept saying "It's DARE" because of his thick British accent, and the guys behind Gorillaz thought that sounded cooler so they changed the title. Also the "It's coming up..." part was inspired by Ryder doing a headphone volume check ("It's coming up, it's coming up, it's there").

The disembodied head is that of Shaun William Ryder one-time lead singer with the band 'The Happy Mondays' who were from Manchester in the North West of England in the UK, when Shaun said the word 'there' in his local accent it sounded like 'dare' so they kept the title of the song as that.
