John Denver. My era. So darn talented. Gone too soon. Written for his wife Annie. His voice was unique. So clean and clear. Outdoorsman. Loved nature. Died in a plane crash viewing nature. 60s 70s were amazing for music. This is a taste of it.

John Denver is my most favorite artist of all-time! Wrote many great songs! Co-wrote "Take Me Home, Country Roads," wrote "Rocky Mountain High," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Goodbye Again," "Shanghai Breezes," and "Calypso" among others! Has such an amazing voice and has a feeling in it when he sings and you should see a live version of this song!

Denver wrote this song on a ski lift after a fight with his then wife, Annie. It departs from the usual verse and chorus structure and is basically telling a story to music. I have loved John's music for as long as I can remember. His gentle, gorgeous voice and beautiful guitar playing complement each other perfectly. The 70's was inundated with singer/songwriters like Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens and James Taylor, but for my money, John Denver outdoes them all. Maybe John took a page from Cat Steven's book when Cat advised "write about what you know". Denver's music is filled with songs about simple pleasures and things he took solace in. Maybe that's why he was so successful.

If you like a pure voice and great heartfelt lyrics you should look into Phil Collins. His solo work is amazing ('In The Air Tonight' LIVE Paris 2004 is a must!) but he was also in Genesis singing backup and later as the lead singer. Ghost just this year did a cover of their 'Jesus He Knows Me' (NOT a religious song as you might expect) and Disturbed did a cover of their 'Land of Confusion'. Both are as good or better than the originals. That is something! Maybe play both versions with the original (although neither is a great Genesis tune.....but their melodies are beyond amazing).

There were so many of John's songs that impacted my life. His song Sunshine On My Shoulders, was my son's lullaby and is now the song he sings to his kids every night. A good friend of mine was part of the folk scene in Las Angeles in the early 60's. He met John as John was trying to break into the music scene. They even roomed together for a few months. Later, after John got big, he invited my friend to his home to meet the girl he would someday marry. That was who this song is written for and about...Annie.

I have many friends who are professional musicians. A couple you may have heard of. Others I'll bet you know at least 1 song they worked on as an engineer or studio musician. That said... the music is still being produced. It's just not popular. I'll not name check anyone but , if you're familiar with the Trop-rock genre , a very good friend's band just had it's 3rd #1 on Trop-rock radio. It's out there. I'm 63. My first concert was Zeppelin in Tampa Fl in 73 and many after. I was 13. Never had an adult go to any show. Times have changed. Look at "country" music. What, in my opinion, a disaster. Best of luck. Capt.Bob SV ( Sailing Vessel ) 27th Chance, Tampa Fl, USA 🇺🇸

This is the music I grew up with and today's music (for the most part) just sucks in comparison. The music industry is no longer so much artist driven. These days it's more industry driven. The singer/songwriter has been largely replaced by industry writers. The soul has been removed from much of what we hear today in deference to making music for the money, rather than as an expression of the artist. When a small group of people control the writing process everything begins to sound the same and the artistry is lost. Just my two cents. John Denver wrote absolutely beautiful music and died much too soon.

John Denver was a great singer and song writer. He had loads of great songs and was more of a folk singer than country. John sounded just as good live (if not better) than he did on the studio versions. He wrote this song in 10 minutes on the ski lift after a row with his wife. He was also an environmentalist before most people knew what this meant. He died far too young and is greatly missed.
