Yeah, sometimes, Jay doesn't get it because he's only hearing half the lyrics. But, yes.... john misses her terribly and denies it... "I ain't missing you! I can lie to myself!".

Totally, the verses are John's true feelings (every time i think of you, i always catch my breath & you don't know how desperate i've become) but then some kind of self preservation bravado takes over for the choruses. We know that he misses her but he's trying to hide it. It's a wonderful song.

This was one of my favorite songs in the 80’s and still is. It’s a classic and is still played on the radio. John Waite’s voice is unique and versatile. He could belt out a rock song and sing a pop tune or ballad just as good. You should checkout a song called “Isn’t It Time”. In the last section where he keeps repeating "I ain't missing you" he sings the pivotal line in the song "I've been lying to myself". That goes along with the other line, "there's a storm raging in my frozen heart". He's trying to put on a front to himself and his friends that he doesn't miss her. But his friends aren't fooled, as evidenced by the line, "no matter what my friends say"; and neither is his heart. Yes, there's a girl from my youth that this song symbolizes for me. It was popular right about the time we broke up, and sometimes it tears me up to hear it to this day.

I was in college in the 1980s. Ear piercing on men was viewed as "peculiar", like a nonverbal signal. For the most part it was overlooked, HOWEVER, any ear piercings needed to be completely closed before the first office job interview. Office jobs were extremely conservative in the 1980s and 1990s.
