In 2001 bassist Leon Wilkeson died of emphysema and liver damage On September 9, 2007, Thomasson died of a heart attack at his home in Brooksville, Florida, at the age of 55. FIRST TIME you've heard this!? MIND BLOWN!! Love your vids, thanks! IN my younger days I used to be able to play this note for note, NOW NOT SO MUCH!! Don't practice or play much anymore :( OH TO BE YOUNG AGAIN!! ALWAYS loved the energy from this performance, oh to be in that crowd just ROCKIN!! The part where they come back in AND JUST JUMP AT ONCE!! EPIC. There's a reason I used to follow a couple bands around the country, such good times!! NOTHING like a live band coming out to a huge crowd and the weed smoke just start filling the air as the sun sets!!

This is why they are the best live band of all time. Before the crash, they played every song note for note that you would have heard in the studio version, but with more passion.

Thank you for this. I'm taking care of my best friend in a hospice capacity, and this is his favorite version of his favorite song. Seeing someone react to it made him smile, and I haven't seen that in ages from him. Thank you for the gift! Hope you and all your loved ones are safe and healthy. Bless up.

Day on the green 77, Oakland Coliseum, every time I watch this video it makes me almost tear up when Ronnie Van Zant says "play it pretty for Oakland" also I remember going to the movies later that year to see "Cheech and Chongs Up In Smoke" and some other movie and in between them there was this beautiful 15 min. tribute for Lynyrd Skynyrd telling about what happened and paying tribute to them after the crash.

Thank you. I was there. "Oakland colosseum, Day on The Green", 1977. I attended 3 out of 5 of these concerts. So hot. Saw a lot of great bands that summer. My favorites were Skynard, Foreigner, and Cheap Trick ( their debut). Cheap Trick had a lot of energy.

Easily their signature song. And one of the preeminent guitar solos ever recorded. The fans knew it was coming. "I must be traveling on now". "If I stay here with you girl". "Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love". Nah it's not about leaving a woman, it's about birds. lol, never heard that one before! The solo at the end is the exaltation of being free. Flying away.

I recall the first time I saw them & the last time I saw them & all the times in between. They played the 3 day Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia, MO July 1974 & they rocked the fairgrounds alive. They lived hard & are almost all in Heaven's Band now. The concerts like this, may they RIP. We went to them in the heat of the summer, not many overweight in those crowds!! Just took what we needed & did without all the pop, chips & munchies! Rock n roll like it was....glad you reacted India & hope you enjoyed the anthem for LS. Sad to see a fellow Okie Steve Gaines playing, I have often wandered how it was for his parents, losing him & Cassie both in the crash. Tragic. Rock on India.....

Loved that Ronnie Van Zant (the singer) was wearing a Neil Young t-shirt... Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young had kind of an argue regarding Neil Young's song 'Alabama' from 1972... Skynyrd recorded their big hit 'Sweet Home Alabama' in order to respond to Neil Young. In the end the members of the band and Young became sort of friends.

Yeah now it's about clout which is corny as hell, auto tuning so they sound better, even though this world has so many fully talented ppl where auto tune is not necessary bc they are blessed, and we have ppl who can't sing, some who cant rap well at all, and others you have to hurry to change the song. Its sad. Yes real talent is their but their very few and we need more raw talent like the few ones that are in business.... It's sad that I had to try covering my ears listening to something on the radio and I just died at that point bc EVERYTHING IN AMERICA IS FUCKED UP AND WRONG WHEN SOMEONE IS SPEAKING LIKE ITS NOTHING AND THEIR ON THE RADIO BUT I HEAR SOME AMAZING TALENT AND THEIR BETTER OFF TRYING ON THEIR OWN BC HOLLYWEIRD HAS LOST THEIR MIND AS WELL....

This song always evokes such emotion in me because of the tragic loss of half the members, the pain and suffering of the remaining members after the crash, and their family. It never really got better for them, I mean how could it after all such a horrific thing to have happen. I do love that his lil brother took on the helm, and it was cool they went on to continue a tribute to such a great band.

Those sunburst hurt...Had a few from Skynyrd concerts myself! It is about leaving a woman and the bird is a metaphor for himself and how he has to be free....the freedom we all want in one way or another...
