If you play the regular song it doesn't have the movie clips. I Know it's hard but the songs words are tell the story... The song and movie clips are from the 1971 movie "Johnny got his gun". All the words are the "soldier in the hospitals thoughts". He was severely injured in the war. He lost his sight, hearing, speech, arms and legs. He has no way to tell the doctors to let him die... He is finally able to communicate with Morris Code..Here is something great to React to. I promise you will like it.. Davina Michelle's cover of the Adele song "Someone like you" or another title you like on her KZitem channel. Best voice that I have ever heard... She posts a cover every week. My first introduction to Metallica was One back in 90 or 91. My older cousin had a stack of CDs and "And Justice for All" was on top and in the stereo on this track. I was instantly hooked, but it took 2 more years to circle back to them. You really should start at the beginning with Kill em All and work your way forward track by track (possibly an album review). That is truly the only way to understand and appreciate their unique and signature sound. Still killing it after 35 years!
@manny3655

Yo, a “Yank” from The States over here. Ya have to understand this song is an homage to a book by Dalton Trumbull, enticed “Johnny Got His Gun.” WWI, American gets blown up a land mine. Loses sight, speech, legs... etc. he can hear what everyone’s saying, but can only communicate using Morse Code with his eyes. The over-the-top instrumentals represent the sounds of actual WAR, adrenaline rush to kill or be killed and confusion. It’s also a metaphor of his conscience and indecisive thoughts. To make a bit more sense, the guitar riffs were meant to sound like machine guns. This may account for the overload you didn’t care for. The film clips were taken from a film of the same story. I suggest giving it another listen armed with this information. P.S. I go to Ireland every year and have somewhat of a love affair with it. Speakin’ of love... love me some Magic Mak. We dig that badass ova here...

The song and music video bus based on "Johnny got his gun" about a young man who goes to WW1 and in an injury loses his sight, taste, hearing, smell, and both arms and legs. He spends a couple of years learning to communicate via morse code with his neck and head where all he says is "sos help kill me" over and over until a friend of his from the war tells him that the military won't kill him because it's "not the military way" and he resolves himself to live not knowing if he is awake or asleep and dreaming until he dies a natural death

The song is based on the movie that is playing during the video. The song are the thoughts of the man who was blown up in the movie. He cant speak, hear, see he is ONE... and wants to die. If you want to see something amazing watch Metallica perform Creeping Death live in Moscow 1991.

This song is literally an allegory for the movie in which it has clips from (Johnny got his gun) and how the effect of war can take their toll on an individual and leave them as a literal living bag of meat that cant talk, hear, see, and has no limbs. And how the character in the movie is just living inside himself with no external contact whatsoever, and slowly begins to realize what his life is and that if this is all it will be, then it is no better than being dead.
@rofyle

The "radio" you are referring are actually scenes taken from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The song is also based on this book. In the book, Johnny, having learned to communicate with his nurse through a system of Morse code, manages to communicate his desire to be taken to Washington D.C. and there presented to the people in order to show them the true horror of war. But the generals and the politicians refuse Johnny's request, because they want the war to continue. The book ends with the generals leaving Johnny in a dark room alone with his nurse to die, his request forever denied.

This is a perfect illustration how modern music is so dumbed down that the current generations don’t know how to interpret sounds. Let’s face it, current popular music has such minimal mental stimulation that when people listen to something with some substance it’s too much for them to process. Personally I find this song extremely simple to follow along to, it’s almost alien for me to imagine someone being overwhelmed by it...these are pretty simple musical ideas. When I was young and didn’t listen to very complicated music I can relate to some instrumental music being hard to grasp (try listening to Alan Holdsworth if you really want to challenge your mind, to most its random sounds but in reality it’s highly composed) but as time went on and I became more attuned to picking out the different patterns I was hearing anything less seemed boring. Keep listening to music that challenges you...you won’t regret it in the long run.

This is why I always recommend people listen to "ONE" before watching the video.

I definitely agree that this video isn't super great. The overlaying of the movie scenes and dialogue over the song made for a nice effect but it wasn't done well enough for it to not distract from the music itself. The album and live versions of the song don't have the low-fi movie audio in them. I feel almost as if they could have made this version of the song separately from the original, and toned down the intensity of the music itself to bring the focus toward the video scenes, dialogue, and various concepts they seemed to want to highlight. A few other bands don't have a problem with making slight changes to their music based on what they're using it for. But this was also from 1989, when Metallica were in their mid twenties and the modern metal scene was still forming. I can't bring myself to call this video a "masterpiece" like some other commenters. The song itself is definitely a good one in a vacuum, but the video is... well. It's more a music video for Johnny Got His Gun than a standalone thing.

if they hated this, they won't even begin to understand pink floyd "i'm not trying to understand what the point of this song is" smh -.-. Pink floyd is too much for their small brains they won't be able even understand a single layer of the song plus it will have "background noise".

This is form Johnny got his gun. It's a book which most people your age have never heard of. The video goes right along with the story.

If you listened to the movie clips you would have understood the song lol. It’s based off an old movie where a soldier was blown up and became physically disabled throughout his entire body but his mind was intact. He taps in Morse code “sos please kill me” because its all he can really do besides simply exist

I can somewhat understand your experience with it.. When I first heard this style of music, it mostly sounded like mashed up sounds. Hard to pick up a feel for it, and hard to distinguish what's going on, musically, throughout the song. Once I started to listen to the same songs, usually from bands like Metallica and GunsNRoses, I started to develop my musical ear and was able to pick up the feel for the rhythm and eventually was able to distinguish the chord changes and which instrument was producing what. Once I picked up the guitar and started learning to play, it made me appreciate and love the instrumentation of these songs even more. Learning the guitar also gave me a better musical ear and a little more insight on how it's actually being played. Unlike the commercialized music that the majority listens to today, these Metal/rock songs are complex and change pace a lot, much like classical music. I'm starting to even like some classical songs now. Lol

Metallica was a well read band. Literature takes a big part of their songs and shows up in tons of their early music. I like the honesty in the reaction, you are right, it’s ok to have different opinion than the masses :) cheers and keep up the good content. This song is referencing a book called Johnny got his gun, and the clips in the video are from the movie.

If you want the true experience, you gotta see them live. I went in January and it was absolutely amazing

The most important thing is that James(the singer) is playing guitar and singing at the shame time and that's very difficult to do it live.

Do Pink Floyd - Time. If you like Tool, you should enjoy them. Maybe you already know Pink Floyd and that would be great, but I just went down your list of videos and most of them were Metal songs. But do not miss one of the greatest bands of all time. I hope you already know them. If not, at least give em a listen. Greetings from old Germany. Thanks for the Rammstein video by the way. ;)

I've always heard of Pink Floyd but I've never listened to their music - one for the future 100%! Also, no worries dude. The Rammstein video was blocked a few months ago but it seems to have been unblocked and people are getting recommended it again..It's just a pity that Rammstein videos always get blocked:(

Here's the thing, there are so many great stories being told in metal songs. My recommendation would be to do a little research on the song before you listen to it just so you get the overall concept of what the band is trying to accomplish. For instance, this song was inspired by a book. And in that book, this soldier gets completely destroyed by a landmine. And the whole song is really James speaking for that soldier since he literally can't speak. He lost both of his arms, both of his arms. He lost most of his face. He can't speak. So, the lyrics are written from his perspective. Metal songs often address war or philosophy or relationships or religion, and I just think it helps to have that little nugget of information in your head before you hear the song so that you're not playing a guessing game, and maybe that helps you connect with the song more.

Great reaction. Even if you don't appreciate certain parts of the music, most people will recognize your comments are nothing more than initial reaction. So don't feel the need to apologize for anything you say. Say what you feel :) DO NOT WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS. Stick with lyrics videos. You focus on the music, and you get the message. That's all you need. No more music videos. Baroness - Chlorine and Wine (very melodic, build up, climax, emotional)

The way to fix your concern is to listen to the song without the video, just the song itself in my opinion. It’s super easy to get distracted and miss the amazing music and lyrics. 🙂 The reason for the slow start and then the build up to fast and furious, is because it’s trying to mimic the wounded soldiers feelings. Starts with sadness, confusion, quiet and ultimately turns into furious fucking anger and fear. The very fast drum beats, listening closely, is supposed to mimic machine gun fire. I’m a hard rock/metal fanatic, I hope my comments are not offensive. I can suggest some other Epic Metallica songs with blistering music and intense lyrics. Love your channel. 🤘🏼❤️🇺🇸🥳🍻
