"Losing my religion" is also a famous Southern saying that means "losing one's mind" (as in becoming annoyed, agitated, and angry). This song is a classic from the early 1990s. Btw, I love both of your tee-shirts.

Fun fact: The instrumental melody of this song originated from when the band's guitarist was trying to learn how to play the mandolin. He would record himself playing while learning, and play it back to listen for his mistakes/flaws. While listening back, he heard this melody and it ended up becoming iconic..

I ABSOLUTELY love this song, the video, the lyrics. I’ve never looked into what it means. Going by the video alone, an angel falls from heaven. The people on the ground laugh and take advantage of him. To the point of trying to imitate the light from heaven and the wings of the angel. All the while, the angel is suffering. The angel dies, but they managed to make their fake wings at his expense. That’s just the video, not the lyrics, and also just my interpretation.

To lose ones religion is an old southern saying. To lose your faith in a person or relationship or faith. It can be interpreted in different ways. Michael Stipe has asserted that it’s a break up song. I can see that in the lyrics.

Here's what I've always thought of when seeing this video/hearing this song - and this is totally just me: the singer is a religious/political dissident in Soviet Russia (or a similar dystopian society, where being religious is illegal), being psychologically tortured - he's been drugged and is hallucinating, and the various semi-religious metaphors/iconography are what he's seeing as he does. In order to stay safe/alive, he has to lose his religion - claim to be an atheist. He's trying to keep up with the questions his captors are asking him, they're trying to get him to confess to "thought crimes" such as having religious beliefs, so he has to choose carefully what he says ("choosing my confessions"). They put him in the corner, they shine a spotlight on him so he can't sleep, it all wears him down. He's nervous, twitchy, can't keep still because he's been awake so long. He realizes he can't continue much longer, and he may already have said things that will damn him in their eyes ("and I don't know if I can do it, oh no, I've said too much"). [NOTE: The KGB under both Stalin and Kruschev (more under Stalin) actually did this kind of thing to people back in the day - to a communist, religion is "the opiate of the masses" - it calms them down and keeps them orderly, but Stalin in particular wanted people to worship *him* - a cult of personality, rather than a true religion - and he didn't want the church to have power, he wanted to be the only power. So people with particularly strong religious beliefs, church leadership, nuns, monks, etc., were rounded up and sent to Siberia or put into psychiatric hospitals to be "cured" of their beliefs.]

More or less a man lost in wonderment for what religion to believe, to stay within the status quo. Too much to handle and too much to keep up with. The wig is sort of a symbolism to the surrealism of religion to begin with. There is more to it than appearance and cake coverings, also the lead singer for R. E. M. was gay it was not easy then to come out of closet could be another parallel with the wig, for hiding. This was also during the AIDS epidemic from 1990 - 1993.
