The reason that the SOS band's songs sound similar to each other because they had a "signature" sound which the electronic drum beat and I think their basslines were done with a synthesizer...

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis used an 808 drum machine on the SOS Band tracks. They were fired from the Time by Prince when he found out they were producing the SOS Band.
