Strangled by the wishes of pater = Having an overbearing father with high expectations. Hoping for the arms of mater = longing for love from the mother who left. It’s such a sad and beautiful song. 💔

His mother abandoned him as a very young child & he always held out hope that she would return & develop a relationship with him, but she never did. He wasted years & tears wishing for a relationship with his mother that never came. Very, very sad.

He met her,after he was famous,and she got in touch.She was living in the USA,and had abandoned another husband,and 2 children.She pretended,to Mick,that she had cancer.After that,he understood that his dad had tried to protect him,from the hurt.He didn’t want anything to do,with her,after that.

Watching young people discover the music of MY youth/teenage years always earns them a subscriber in me. Yeah, I get it... music continues to evolve. Nothing wrong with that. But these classics are timeless, and it's good to see younger people learning about them, and the meaning they had to us in our youth. It helps bridge the generation gap.

Vocals are Mick Hucknall and trumpet is played by Tim Kellett. Kellett played with Simply Red for about six years in the mid 80s. This group from the UK was very talented and known for their “soul”. ❤️

Don't ever judge a book by it's cover because this guy has a voice that's unbelievable just like the line... I went to see Mick about 3 or 4 years back. He's nearly 60 now, and he still sounds as good as any recording he ever made. He is a national treasure for us folks over here.

Reminds me of my grandma from Santa Monica. We named our grandparents after the city they lived in. He wrote this about his Mum and because of the neglect she left on him.. beautiful song..."nothing had the chance to be good, cause nothing ever could"

A dedication to my kids when I had to leave for some time because of their father, it will always make me shed so many tears.... Even though I can't rewind time I'm with them again just now I'm older they are older and alit has changed just wish I could hold them more so tight before my time is done....... But until then I'll keep holding on so tight... By the way this song was about his mom.... This is why I'm touched by this song..

Sadly his situation did not end as it did for your kids. His mother was a wrong un from what he has spoken of about her. He dedicated a song to his father for bringing him up on his own and sadly he never got re-married. Glad your and your kids got a happy ending. Every situation is different. Life is complicated.

A trumpet can be the most obnoxious sound or the most soothing, as you put it. To me the way it's played and recorded in this song is super haunting and sad for sure. Like the sound of a memory itself.

I was in my teens in the 80s and we had some amazingly good music. I've heard this song so many times yet it still gives me good chills. Such an amazing voice. The one part you asked about @ 4:00 about "why did the man roll his eyes"... I just figured this out! He is singing "Strangled by the wishes of pater (father) who is looking at him for mom (mater) always running to his aid (when he fell off the bike). However, he was "wishing for the arms of mater" mater = mother.

His name is Mick Hucknall. Commonly referred to as Simply Red. Kinda like Hope Sandoval was the lead singer for Mazzy Star and Ian Anderson was the lead singer for Jethro Tull. Mick was the lead singer for the band Simply Red. Mick is English. Born in 1960. Married to the same woman since 2010 and has one daughter. He is a gifted singer.

You must listen all their albums, specially from 1985 to 1992 including their live performance in Montreux and the live tour of the "Stars" album. You gonna be touched by many of the greatest song composed on those years.
