"Crystal Ball" is a brilliant song from their following album, their first with guitarist Tommy Shaw; you'll see he brought serious chops to the band. "Fooling Yourself" and the title song from _The Grand Illusion_ album are fun Styx songs from the late 70s.

Wow, someone had the balls to react to the awesome song and band. That was satisfying. Please don't take what you read from the critics to heart. Their later stuff was just as good and actually sold better. The critics said the same thing about the direction Steve Perry took Journey and they sold like crazy. It is the fans that matter. You've earned a new sub. Please do "Queen Of Spades", "Crystal Ball", "Lady", and "Pieces Of Eight". Styx is a very deep dive, they had tons of bangers. Also know that they had 3 different singers that did leads but the main ones were Dennis DeYoung w/keys and Tommy Shaw w/lead guitar. Both great singers.

It was my hope you would enjoy this song. IMHO it is the finest piece of music this band ever made so in a way it's almost bad to start with this as your first listen because I'm not sure anything else you hear from them will be as good. I will use future requests for a few others from them that are close. Another personal favorite of mine is called Crystal Ball. The vocalist here, Dennis DeYoung, has such a great sounding voice. To me it sounds menacing in a darker song like this. My disappointment is that as this band went on Mr. DeYoung started being relegated (or maybe chose to be relegated!) to gushy love songs. To me he was always best in these heavier rock songs where his voice was a yin to the heavy music's yang. Early Styx was progressive and had a very distinct keyboard sound to go along with the heavy guitar. Though this is their finest moment (again, IMHO) their career really didn't take off until subsequent albums where they became a slave to chasing the hit single dragon. Thank you for the fine analysis.

That's a very early Moog synth. A small, 27 key monophonic synth with lots of knobs and patch cables to put different tone and noise generators with different ocillators and effects to construct sounds. No memory, no presets. People would carry diagram books with settings written down to recall sounds created in the studio. Korg and Yamaha jumped in the fray in the early 80's with the first fully digital synths, the Poly6(Korg) and the DX7(Yamaha). You could actually save patches for instant recall in live settings.

My favorite Styx song from my favorite album of all time Equinox. Thanks so much for playing this and the spot on commentary. Had you known I guarantee you would have played the prelude first ( Prelude 12) that leads perfectly into Suite Madame Blue. Side Two of Equinox is unreal and needs to be played LOUD. Love the entire Side 2 of this album. Styx is a very unique band in that they had 3 lead singers. This is song is sung by Dennis Deyoung. He was the main lead singer of Styx (currently not with them anymore). After this album was released John Curulewski left the band and was replaced by Tommy Shaw. Dennis and Tommy were the main singers thereafter. James (JY) Young was their third singer and would usually sing lead on one or two songs per album. Tommy and James now front the current rendition of Styx. The last two albums they (Styx) have released ( The Mission ( 2017) & Crash Of The Crown (2021)) are absolutely fantastic. From 1975 - 1983 the Styx lineup of Dennis Deyoung, Tommy Shaw, James Young & brothers John & Chuck Panozzo Styx was as good and as popular as any band in America. Other songs I would recommend for your channel and not necessarily the hits are Dennis Deyoung led: Castle Walls, Come Sail Away, Queen Of Spades, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, AD1928/Rockin The Paradise, and his final major hit with Styx Show Me the Way. As with this song ( Suite Madame Blue) showing the loss of American innocence the video for the song Show Me the Way shows the complete loss of innocence of a young kid. Dennis's songs can do this as well or better then any composer/singer /musician that's ever walked the planet. Show Me the Way is one of the best videos & songs you will ever hear or see. Tommy Shaw led Styx songs that I'm sure you would like include: Man In the Wilderness, Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, Hold Back the Darkness, Save Us From Ourselves, Locomotive, Fooling Yourself, & Love In the Midnight. JY songs I'd recommend are: Miss America, Young Man, Midnight Ride, Half Penny/Two Penny & These Are The Times. Thank you so much for playing Suite Madame Blue.

Their early albums are thought-provoking, sometimes haunting, and often heavy (thinking of the song Man of Miracles). The song was almost haunting and I don't remember the original giving me that, like that chill down to my bones. I am not really sure why shes not better known here in the US, because honestly, before people were telling me in the comments to listen to her, I had never even heard of her. But somethings telling me that's probably not going to be the case for too much longer because she has a lot of talent and she is super unique. I feel like that's going to take her really far. I saw Styx live on this very day (Jul 21) many moons ago in 1981. It was my first concert. My older brother took me to that show for my 13th birthday. 😊

My big disappointment with Mr. DeYoung is that on later Styx albums he passed the material like this song to Tommy Shaw and insisted on singing the love ballads and show tune-ish tracks. I'm not sure DeYoung realized just how good his voice was on the more rock oriented songs.

This song was on their Equinox album released in 1975. The following year was America's bicentennial anniversary (1776-1976), so the song asks, "Where are you going, America? You know, you're not so young anymore. We do love you, but let's start anew and go in a direction different from and better than the one we're in." Poignant stuff, indeed. There are many Styx songs I love, but this might well be their best one. Thanks for reviewing it!

When you said you’d never heard of this band, :Sal. Yeah, I think I’ve mentioned that there were so many HUGE bands from this time who were SO famous their names are known through the decades, but also dozens more outstanding bands who filled Arenas and sold millions of albums and were a deep and essential part of all the music scene we enjoyed at the time. Styx is one of those. You’ll run into many more as you continue…it was a musical banquet of riches.

You can skip MOST of their 'top-forty' songs, they have mass appeal, but this one wasn't among them. Here are some other of my favorites: "Witch Wolf", "Miss America", "Castle Walls", "Born for Adventure", "Boat on the River", "Queen of Spades", "Put me On", "This Old Man", "The Grand Illusion", "Half-Penny, Two-Penny/A.D. 1958", and ok, one hit single "Mr. Roboto".

Mid to late 70s is the golden age of Styx, when the progressive and theatrical sensibilities of DDY and the hard rocking sensibilities of JY and TS worked *together* to create masterful progressive rock, with this song being a prime example. Great stuff. Later, the band would split over their differences.

Styx is awesome - fav band since '77. As mentioned, this song is best heard as when you listen to the Equinox album with intro track "Prelude 12" (kzitem.info/news/bejne/rIWisIR3a6aGpaw). Styx had 3 lead vocalists and songwriters resulting in a wide variety of styles. Phase 1, the Wooden Nickel years, is more raw and rockin' including some jazz-rock fusion influence by John Curulewski; Phase 2 starting with the first album with A&M Equinox is more polished; and Phase 3 from albums Cornerstone to Kilroy; and a few more phases afterwards. I'd suggest next: "Come Sail Away" (Album: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xo95rKaZfKOZaoY or LIVE from the 1996 Return To Paradise tour: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t4N8vJ99emOCmaw). *** NOT THE EDITED "OFFICIAL VIDEO" version!!! *** "CASTLE WALLS"(Fan video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/paOjqnyhmoZ6maw, Lyrics:kzitem.info/news/bejne/kWiZwKODbqSWpKQ). "Man In The Wilderness"(Album:kzitem.info/news/bejne/ypCXuJ-nsYGFp6Q, Re-mix Extended:kzitem.info/news/bejne/w5-B2Hh8e6Jhoag, Live:kzitem.info/news/bejne/qo-B3aSNiYFyaJg). "Fooling Yourself"(Album:kzitem.info/news/bejne/wqaK35ONnqxliWk, Live: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w6h6qq6BiJWng3Y). "Queen Of Spades"(Album: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p46aln6Ia4WDeG0, Live by current lineup: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l6-etY1mq19nhWk). and many more.

Haven’t seen an answer to your question so here goes. Dennis’s DeYoung: Lead vocal; synthesizer & keyboards. John Curulewski: Guitar; vocals James Young: Guitar (lead on this one I believe); vocals Chuck Pannozo: Bass Guitar John Pannozo: Drums & percussion As someone mentioned, John Curulewski left the group not long after the Equinox album was cut. He was replaced, I believe on the tour, be Tommy Shaw. Tommy Shaw wrote a lot of great pieces for subsequent albums. IMO, some of his best are ‘Crystal Ball’, ‘Boat on the River’, & ‘Renegade’. Tommy Shaw, James Young, & I believe Chuck Pannozo are still touring with Styx. John Pannozo passed away in the 90s and Dennis DeYoung went his own way after some differences with the band. He and Tommy Shaw wrote some great pieces though.

Wow, haven't heard this in a long time! Brings back many high school memories. Used this song in particular as psych-up music for swim races. Later learned to play on acoustic guitar. So good! Astounding production quality for the era.

I grew up listening to Styx in the 70's through mid 80's and saw them in concert 11 times, including their 1980 show in London while I was stationed at the now closed RAF Bentwaters Air Base (show covered the Cornerstone album, plus major hits from prior albums). Always loved Dennis DeYoung's vocals and keyboards, the guitars and vocals of both Tommy Shaw and James Young, plus the work of Chuck and John Panozzo. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Paradise Theatre album was so-so and the Kilroy Was Here album strayed too far from the Stygian sound that I grew up with. Thankfully, I still have all of my original albums and have downloaded same to my computer.

Pieces of Eight" by Styx was, maybe, the first album I ever bought, like in 7th grade. Lots of cool, very listenable songs. "Come Sail Away" and "Miss America" are two that leap to mind. Another group that was huge at about the same time that Styx was (mid-70's) was ELO, or Electric Light Orchestra. You could do a lot worse than listen to these three gems , which just popped into my head: "Do Ya," "Turn to Stone," and "Mr. Blue Sky." The mid-to-late 70's had their own little Next Gen of Cool Bands!
