My all time favorite song. First heard it in 1964 when I was 15 years old. Now, in 2020, it’s my iPhone ringtone.

The Rising Sun was a popular pub name in the UK and still is, the earliest known use was in 14th century. It’s all tied in with French heraldry en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun

I read its a prison song for female prisoners. Prison had a raising sun over the door apparently. So "house of rising sun" tell your children not to do what i have done. Wearing ball and chain. That make sence. But im not sure, always stories and theoris about song with unknown orgin

The House Of The Rising Sun was a brothel on Royal St. in New Orleans in the 1850s 1860s, the Madam was Madam Le Soleil Lavant (translated: "Rising Sun" Lavant) .There was also a women's prison in New Orleans around the same time that had a iron, ornamental crosspiece over the gate that depicted a rising sun, so there is some dispute over which is correct. It may have been a little of both due to the "ball and chain" lyric.

Thanks for the background info. As for the dispute on which one is right (brothel or women's prison), I would guess a brothel is more likely "the ruin of many young poor boy" than a women's prison. 🤔

Alan Price, the organist, is a really good organist, and it's such a pleasure to hear him but, as usual, you can have the better players of the universe, if the singer is not a good one, there's no song. Here,Eric Burdon is a huge talent. So we have all the package. But I agree with you , it's a masterpiece.

@@johnrectangle6034 I heard a DJ play the song in Sept. of 1964. The singer made the song stand out. As I watch this video, I can see the talent of all the band members. Alan Price is outstanding but Eric Burdon's voice carried the song for me for 58 years.
