I have tons of channels to watch with my cable package, I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, but instead I am checking for new vids from you young men. Why? because it is pure joy to watch you view a classic song for the first time and see you appreciate the greatness of a diverse group of music genres. Watching your reactions allows me to relive the first time I heard a great song. Your enthusiasm and keen analysis is greatly appreciated. My suggestion would be to do movie soundtracks, there is some great music in this genre, including Whitney Houston's , I will always love you. My favorite is the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever. It came out around 1978, and was the largest selling soundtrack until , The Bodyguard soundtrack with Whitney Houston. I am so happy for your success, and I wish you guys the best!

The music I grew up with. I'm glad you've found some. Your heritage young brother. Some of the groups of this time came from the church, but since this music started in the cities these groups started on street corners by people harmonizing. They found each other in class, after class, in barber shops, school gyms, and on weekends. The practiced in hallways, subways stations, and in each others kitchens. They had no money for instruments. Their voices were their instruments. There would be sing-off competitions in every neighborhood and then, neighborhood against neighborhood. Perhaps you could do a Do-Wop Wednesday's and dig further into your heritage.

Ugh. Doo Wop is so cool. I feel like my generation (I'm 43) still had Doo Wop in movie soundtracks and on Oldies radio in our parents' cars. Heck, Guns n' Roses covered The Flamingos, lol. But I think a lot of millennials and zoomers have less cultural context for older music. I'd hate to think they miss out on some of those brilliant old street-corner harmonies. I like to know if a song was from the 50s, the 60s, the 70s, or the 80s. Or even the 90s, honestly. And after a couple of years, I began to know. Now I can zero in on the year, half the time. Especially in fast-moving eras like the 60s or the 80s when every year had its own sound.

From the late '50s through the early '70s, some of the very best pop-music came from girl groups - The Chantels being among the tops. Other greats include The Shirelles, The Ronettes, The Marvelettes, and a little bit later, The Supremes. Excellent reaction and recognition of the quality and integrity of the music of that era.

This song was from 1957, actually. Their only other hit came with "Look in My Eyes" (1961; US#14, r&b#6). Commercially, "Maybe" (1957; US#15, r&b#2) basically kickstarted the whole "Girl Groups" sound that dominated Pop and R&B radio for the next several years. Producers like Phil Spector (and his "wall of sound"), Shadow Morton, Holland-Dozier-Holland, and vocal groups like The Shirelles, The Chantels, The Bobettes, The Chiffons, The Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans, The Jaynetts, The Shangri La's, The Crystals, The Velvelettes, The Supremes, The Orlons, Ruby & The Romantics, The Marvelettes, The Cookies, The Ad-Libs, The Toys, The Exciters, The Murmaids, The Ikettes, The Raindrops, Martha and The Vandellas, The Essex, The Paris Sisters, The Blossoms, The Jelly Beans, The Angels, The Dixie Cups (as well as solo artists like Mary Wells, Lesley Gore, Sue Thompson, Darlene Love, Dusty Springfield, Little Eva, Dee Dee Sharp, Linda Scott, Shirley Ellis, Petula Clark, Betty Everett, Twinkle, Little Peggy March, Barbara Mason, Lulu, Millie Small, Sandy Shaw, and dozens more merged Pop songcraft with R&B influences, and sung songs aimed at an emerging teenage market. Before WWII, the concept of "teenage" was just developing. But by the late 1950s, "the teenager" became a big target market for all sorts of things, but teenage lovesongs of the second half of the 20th Century became an absolute art form. They are almost designed to be as disposable as they are desirable, with melodies that get stuck in your head for days. And on the surface, the stories and scenarios behind the lyrics may have seemed anodyne, but scratch the surface and there's actually a lot of depth and sometimes even darkness in the realistic lyrics (though many are politically incorrect by 2020 standards) and topical themes of some Girl Groups songs that other genres weren't coming near. Until Funk and Soul (and some Rock) began tackling similar territory in the mid-to-late 60s, that is. The Girl Group sound and image ended up dying out before the decade ended, but the template and iconography have proven cultural touchstones for the whole era and went on to influence acts as disparate as The New York Dolls, Ramones, Television, and Blondie. And that's just the Punk acts from the Lower East Side in the 1960s who were influenced by the sound. I definitely recommend digging deeper into this rabbit-hole of classic Rhythm and Blues. The story of Girl Groups is one of the coolest chapters in music history.

Oh Yes. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. Yes. Tim & Fred, I’m a school teacher getting ready for kids to come back to school next week. I LOVE teaching (been doing it for 36 years). But this.... is stressful. When I get home every afternoon, I have some serious bad feelings going on. You guys make me smile and put the stress aside for a while. And I just keep smiling. Thank you for being you and doing what you do. On to a million subscriptions!

You have good musical taste. She's a true singer, greatness. I have two other songs by them Look in my Eyes and He's Gone. Worth reacting to. Keep up the good work.

Oh, the memories! Slow summer days at the plunge... a huge California pepper tree providing an umbrella of shade, and that jukebox booming bass as this song begins. Through the heartache and tears of a short summer love gone bad I can still feel the goosebumps.

Arlene Smith, the lead singer, was 14 or 15 when that song was recorded, and 16 when the single was released. She is believed to be an uncredited co-writer. She did write the first single off the album, "He's Gone". She also performed at Carnegie Hall when she was 12.

They were one of the "First" Girlbands from the 1950's. They became a Group as Students at their Catholic High School. Other Girlbands were The Bobbettes (Mr. Lee), about their Jr. High School Principal and The Shirelles (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow). If you can check out Girl Groups The Story Of A Sound. Another one of their Songs "I Love You So" was featured in Look Who's Talking. Their First Manager was Richard Barrett who would later work with The Three Degrees (When Will I See You Again). He wasn't as big as Berry Gordy (Motown) but he tried. They recorded for The Same Label that would later sign The Bobbettes, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Unlike their Male Counterparts who could practice and Sing on Street Corners, they practiced in the Locker Room at their School.
