The lead singer Doug Gray lives here in South Carolina. My dad my brother in-law and I done some home renovations on some of the property homes he owns some years back. After the work was finished he gave us and our family's special VIP passes to their next concert that was happening locally. When we arrived he took us on their tour bus to meet the whole band!! We stood on the side of the stage for the whole concert. A few of us even got to sing this song on stage with the whole band!! This is my most memorable moment from a concert iv been too!!! Heard It In A Love Song is a really great song as well 👍

Yesss! Their best ever. Among other bands such as Poco, Pure Prairie League, early Eagles, etc., The Marshall Tucker Band helped this 70s rocker appreciate country rock back in the day. One of my local FM rock stations played some country rock such as this one, but the country stations wouldn't play this stuff at the time. It wasn't country enough for the country stations, and it was too country for most rock stations. Thanks for doing this. I loved it.

I’m not a big fan of country-western music, but I do love me some Marshall Tucker Band! I had 2 or 3 record albums of theirs in the 70’s. You know, they are definitely a rock band, but they like to bring in things like steel guitars and a flute, some fiddle…which adds some bluegrass or blues and jazz elements. It’s really a fusion of different musical genres worked into rock music! So cool. They have had like 30 different members of this band at different times.

The lyrics of this song are talking about the 49er gold rush of 1849 in California. The dust cover trails were covered wagon trails. The line about empty cartridges lining the gutters of the street was technically not correct because there were no 44 caliber handguns at that time that used cartridges. They were all cap and ball. The main character in the story and his family did make it to their destination, but his was shot and killed by a claim jumper. This was a person who would come in and kill or scare off a person who had a legal claim to their mining property. Unfortunately, this happened quite often over the greed of someone else's gold after they had done the hard work. I just wanted to let you in on the history of the song. This song has always been one of my favorites.

The great western writer Louis L'Amour wrote a novel set in a mining camp like the one in the song. The camp starts descending into murderous anarchy as robbers, gangs and claim jumpers begin to take over. "The Empty Land" tells the story of a very deadly gunfighter hired to bring back Order...not Law. Harsh, melancholy and violent. It's one of his best.

I still think you'll also enjoy A NEW LIFE from the album of the same name, 24 HOURS AT A TIME, TAKE THE HIGHWAY, SOUTHERN WOMAN, and many others. These guys were just 1 of 3 famous groups that successfully incorporated a flute into pop/rock music - the other two being The Moody Blues and Jethro Tull. R.I.P. Toy, Tommy, and George. They had real jazz chops, too.
@CuttinEJ

Jethro Tull wasn’t the only guy who could make a flute rock. Marshal Tucker didn’t fit neatly into any particular niche or genre. Bluegrass, country, folk and rock all loved them. This song got a good deal of air time on the rock stations where I lived at the time. For Amber: A lot of people who started out for California and the gold fields never got any further than Tulsa or Omaha. It was a tough and dangerous journey. For Jay: Back when I still had a lawn, if you had stopped to look at my grass and taken your shoes off to feel it with your toes, I would have considered that the highest praise and the greatest compliment possible. Much love ❤️ 😊
