Imagine as a child seeing nearly all the biggest singers coming together for one song. USA for Africa raised $44.5 million to help children and families suffering drought and famine in Africa and over $63 million total, with 10% helping hunger and homelessness in the US. Money going to Africa also started 70 recovery and development projects, including agriculture, fishing, water management, manufacturing, and reforestation. One man who lived in Addis Abbas Ethiopia said that they named the bread made from the wheat provided from the aid they named Michael bread after Michael Jackson.

The reason Michael is by himself in his first solo is because he skipped the awards ceremony that was taking place that evening (as that’s how they were able to get so many huge stars at the same place and same time), and did sound checks etc before the others arrived. The only other person who recorded their part separately was Dylan, apparently because he was too shy to perform it in front of everyone else.

I’ll never forget the premier of this song. Bought the record the next day. Our teen church group performed this song and I had the pleasure of singing Diana Ross’ part. It’s sad that the newer generation don’t know most of these phenomenal artist.

Forty two of the biggest names in American pop music in the mid-1980s. White, Black, Male, Female, Rock, Country... it didn't matter- they left their egos at the door.

What stands out most to me is that every single one of these superstars are true musical talents that made their names before the music video age so you know they have the talent first and foremost...so many awesome memories came back watching the individual stars. The man on the keyboards never really gained fame but his name was Greg Phillinganes who had a minor hit "Who Do You Love". If you're the guy on keyboards on this song then that speaks volumes for how highly the music industry holds thinks of you.

OK Now you gotta do Bandaid's It's Christmas Time. Also goes by Feed The World. It's what inspired Americans to follow up with theirs. Big push for Bob Geldof to get nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for it.

Lots of great stories about the recording session, It was the sister song to "Do They Know It’s Christmas,” which began the whole famine relief for Africa started by Bob Geldof & they both snowballed w/ the climax being the Live Aid concert in 1985 The song was recorded doing the night of the American Music Awards when all the "Stars" would be together. Some of music royalty didn't show but most did. The Producer was the great Quincy Jones & to stop any grandstanding he had a sign that said "Check Your Egos At The Door" for everyone to see One of the best stories is after they had been singing all day & night & everyone was tired & MJ & Stevie Wonder were working at a bit for the ending & Stevie suggested they sing a phrase in Swahili to avoid sounding offensive & finally Ray Charles had had enough & said “It’s three o’clock in the godamn mornin’. I can’t even sing in English!"
